Edelbrock Carb and fuel filter?
I just realized today that once I switch over to my edelbrock performer carb, I won't have a fuel filter. I haven't looked that close yet, but it doesn't look like it has a little one in the carb like my old Q Jet. What does everyone use for a fuel filter with an aftermarket carb and where would you mount it? Thanks!

Re: Edelbrock Carb and fuel filter?
You can use a Fram G12 fuel filter. Its a standard filter with 5/16 hose ends on each side. You'll need to cut your stock fuel line and run a small hose from it to your new carb and place the fuel filter inline with the hose. Don't try to remove the hose fitting on your new carb. Its a proprietary fitting. You'll probably need to modify your throttle linkage too. I had to cut the stock rod and cut threads and then put a threaded ball joint on the carb end.

Re: Edelbrock Carb and fuel filter?
If you'd like a clear plastic filter, a Wix 33002 is a universal one for 5/16" hose. 33003 is for 3/8".

Summit sells the single line kit made for Edelbrock carbs.

Re: Edelbrock Carb and fuel filter?
I had the same prob. I bought the clear plastic job with a small
piece of rubber inbetween.

Re: Edelbrock Carb and fuel filter?
Where abouts is a good place to cut the fuel line? I assume I just cut a piece of the metal out about the length of the filter and then splice it in with the rubber hose? Or do I cut it off right before the carb and then run rubber line into the carb? I haven't installed my new carb/intake yet, but it appears that the fuel line may be in a different location. Thanks!

Re: Edelbrock Carb and fuel filter?
Just cut it close enough to the carburetor, but not too close.
I have a chrome/glass filter with a replaceable element on mine. Got it at my NAPA store. I'm sure many other parts houses have them. But, it's your choice as to what you use.

Re: Edelbrock Carb and fuel filter?
I have the clear filter installed inside the frame rail, close to the fuel pump and a metal housing inline filter near the carb. My tank has a lot of sand in it so I keep a spare clear one in the glove box. I have changed the clear one several times, the filter near the carb was overkill it has not needed to be changed.

Re: Edelbrock Carb and fuel filter?
Looks like I'll just buy a clear one from the parts store next time I'm there. Does the stock fuel line thread into the carb in the same spot as it does on the edelbrock? I haven't compared, but it looks as if the fuel fitting goes in from the side on the Q-jet and from the front on the edelbrock.

Re: Edelbrock Carb and fuel filter?
That edelbrock unit looks slick and sells for decently cheap on ebay, but it uses AN fittings, and I'm running all stock pump etc. except for the carb unfortunately.

Re: Edelbrock Carb and fuel filter?
Look at Jeg's or Summit's catalog or online site, you will find the fittings and hose to plumb to your stock fuel pump with using the Edelbrock part. If you do see what you need let me know, I will pull out my receipts and get the part numbers

Re: Edelbrock Carb and fuel filter?
ya man. just do what glenn said or what i did. i cut into my stock fuel line and put in a canister style filter with small rubber lines attaching the filter to the stock metal line and another connected to the aftermarket fuel line for the eldelbrock carbs (not the actual EDELBROCK piece to much $$$) email me and i can send ya a pic of my setup.

Re: Edelbrock Carb and fuel filter?
Best place for the fuel filter is after the fuel pump, placing it before the pump can agravate..or even create a vapor lock condition.
The glass one is great, however, if you aren't carefull, it can shatter and cause fuel to spray all over the place. Make sure there is no way it can hit anything, liek valve covers or the intake. It is a great tool though and I have run them on all my trucks. If your truck was originally a V-8 with 4 bbl carb, or a GMC with a V-6, you'll need a 3/8 inch filter, andy 2 bbl V-8 or inline, and you'll need the 5/16 filter. Also, you'll probably need a spacer for inbetween the carb and air filter. I used one from a van in the junk yard, cost me a buck. When routing the fuel line to the carb, you'll probably discover that the air filter will hit the fuel line, This is why I use the tall van spacer instead of a 1/2 inch spacer from the parts store. As for the throttle rod... personally, i have neverr had an issue... ran edelbrock carbs on all my trucks. I DID however have to mod the carb a bit. Had to enlarge the hole for the rod. |

Re: Edelbrock Carb and fuel filter?
my truck was originally a V8 4bbl, so all I need it a 3/8 filter and a couple little pieces of rubber line by the sounds of it? Will the original fuel line thread into the edelbrock carb?

Personally, I run an inline filter under the back of the cab, in the rubber section between the cab line and the frame line. It's out of sight down there.

Re: Edelbrock Carb and fuel filter?
i used the 90* fuel fitting from checkers (same as eldelbrocks but 10$ instead of 60$) and a 3ft piece of braided fuel line from checkers (25$) along with a standard filter. would have looked much better with the eldelbrock piece but this works for my driver. i just chopped the stock steel line and attached the braided to it.
oh and if you go this route make sure you get two copper crush washers to go with the 90* fuel line. they give ya stupid nylon washers that WILL NOT EVER work. Last edited by QKENUF4U; 11-26-2005 at 12:37 PM. |

Re: Edelbrock Carb and fuel filter?
Hey I was wondering something about that hard line on the carb in the pics above. Can you reverse the line simply by flipping it around and have the fuel line point towards the rear? I have an electric fuel pump on mine and thought it would look a lot better if I picked one up and did that. These things are expensive so I didn't want to just buy it and try it.

Re: Edelbrock Carb and fuel filter?
I got the hard line kit too and had to put it on hold because of those stupid nylon washers. But that cear filter is the way to go. Where do I acquire some copper crush washers?

Re: Edelbrock Carb and fuel filter?
These lines can be flipped backward. They only cost 10 bucks at Checkers or real cheap on EBay as well, they are not Edelbrocks, just some off brand, but they work.
