another timing question

i have read all the posts regarding how to time these trucks...my problem is the same, but mine just won't start...i have tried all suggestions...nothing..
so i guess my question in does the top part under the cover have to point to the #1 cyl?? at top dead ctr. when i bring it tdc the pointer is facing the firewall, and i wire from there,,but still does not start... dist. is brand new hei, the engine is 350 with 78 block, was told it came from summit back in 98 or 99...any help....thanks joe berkeley

I think the best way to make sure the timing is correct after installing a distributor is to use a timing light. The distributor can be in correctly, but still be way to advanced or retarded. You do have good spark?

Yes, the rotor should be pointing at the #1 cylinder. If it's pointing at the firewall, you may have installed the distributor 180 degrees off.

I always put my finger over the spark plug hole for cylinder 1, Turn the Crankshaft, and when it tries blowing your finger out, bring the balancer around to top dead center. Then you'll know you aren't 180 degrees off.

i do have spark, i think i'll move distr. to point towards the #1 cyl. then as soon as i get it started i'll use a light..thanks for the reply..joe berkeley
