vent window rebuild

Ok, I finally got my vent window hardware rechromed. Cost $180, and was a 9 out of 10 in terms of quality. I'm satisfied. Anyway, I started the reassembly today. This isn't that easy of a job. I got them back together and found out that I can't close my vents. 2 questions -

How tight should these things be after new rubber, etc is installed?

Has anyone in 60 mile radius around OKC ever rebuilt these?

I need some help. I'm so close to getting the truck back together, I don't have any tinkering patience left in me. I'm at the point of just going out and buying some at the junkyard and reassembling the doors so I can enjoy the truck for a while...but what a waste that would be if everything else has been redone...

HELP!

Re: vent window rebuild

Actually, I did. I found a post from krue with various links. One of those listed the steps. I followed them, but somethings still not right. Thanks for mentioning that though.

Re: vent window rebuild

I did mine (assuming your talking about the rubber) and they are extremely tight. They seem to be getting better everytime I open and close them, and hope they will break in with time. But for now its a 2 hander.

Re: vent window rebuild

Well, I haven't actually glued in the glass yet. I had hoped to get these a bit tweaked out before I installed the glass. I bought some new ones a few months ago and they opened and closed freely. Maybe its the rubber kits we're buying...??

Re: vent window rebuild

I will NEVER rebuild a set of these vent windows again. I would rather have a pile of auto trans parts dropped in front of me and have to put them together to make a working trans. The new rubber makes them fit really tight. try loosening the nut where the spring is on the bottom a little bit

Re: vent window rebuild

I paid 180 for both assemblies to be rechromed. I checked with the vendors on the board, and the best price I could get for 2 new vents was $300 + shipping with a "no return" policy. The 180 looked like a valid alternative.

I've played with these a bit more over the last few days. It appears that my frame is bent just a tad. The chrome that holds the glass isn't fitting into the frame quite right. Aside from the rubber being EXTREMELY tight, the chrome frame isn't fitting correctly and is rubbing the main upright. I think I'm just going to go pull a fairly good set at the junkyard and get this cab sealed up so I can wash it and take it for a spin around the block. It's nearly been 2 years since I started my restoration and I'm ready to drive it.

Re: vent window rebuild

I always wonderd if they were worth rebuilding or just buying a pair, kind of like brake calipers. They make rebuild kits for them but why when you can get the calipers for a few dollars more.

Re: vent window rebuild

I rebuilt mine tonight. They weren't too bad. They are a lot tighter than they were, but the Tx nuclear summers had really killed the old gaskets. In hindsight, I would do the rebuild again, it's a LOT cheaper.

Re: vent window rebuild

Its not the installation of the rubber into the track that's the bad part. The window frame doesn't want to close properly after the new rubber is in.
