steer. clmn & trans ?????s

all,
i recently installed (mockup) my new 700r4 trans. in my '72 chevy 2wd p/u. my question is does the factory steer. column have enough shift space (movement) to shift into all the gears now available with the o/d trans.?? does anyone have any pointers (secrets) that they would share as to how they did the conversion from th350 to 700r4?? specifically related to the column itself.

The stock column I just put in my truck had enough shift space to go into all the gears. I do not have a stock linkage going to the transmission though. I had to bend the arm on the shaft going from the frame to the transmission to get it into L1 & L2. Sorry I don't have any pics.

I installed a 700R4 in a 69 C10. When I purchsed parts from BowTie Overdrive I was steered into ordering thier shift likage package. I did not need it. The stock linkage works very well. Remove the linkage clamp off of your old trany (assuming here it was auto), put the trany and colunm shifter in park, then install the linkage clamp and linkage on the trany. This is how I installed mine, worked great with no additional adjustments needed. If it does not I have the kit, will let it go cheep.

My 700R4 worked just fine with the factory linkage, I tested it and have never had the occasion to ever shift into first again.
