Cab Swap

I really need to swap the cab on my 71. A local place has some they buy from Cali.

So what am I getting myself into? There doesn't seem to be much to it other than the firewall side.

Any advise is greatly apprieciated!!!

I am just finishing mine up.
Basically I unhooked the bulkhead wiring harness, mastercylinder, and other goodies from the firewall.
Pulled the steering column.
unbolted the fenders (should have just pulled the clip as a unit?!?)
Removed the doors
Removed the bolts that hold it to the frame
Used front-end loader to lift it off.
And in reverse order, I am putting it all back together.

If it didn't get dark at freakin' 5:30pm here I could have done it in a weekend.

I am just making it prettier and neater as I re-install it, so it is slowing me down a little.

Take some pictures first will help. You may want to get a 71-72 cab as the 67-70 have different gas pedal setup, and 67-68 have diffferent parking brake cable setup.

I just pulled a cab from a truck at a local yard here in Southern California. I gutted the inside and brought all the parts home. I ttok out the steering column and removed the complete heater assembly. I also had to remove the front fenders and hood. I did it all in about 2 hours. The cab cost me $100.

The salvage yard lifted it up and delivered it to the body shop for $30.

I'll take pics as it is done.

Thanks for the great info and tips!!!

How big of a pain is it to change the gas peddle hook-up to work or the parking brake? I only ask because I think my selection of cabs will be limited to what they have at that time and of course I'll want to get the best metal I can. The idea is to not have to do any metal work going this route.

$100 for a Cali cab... Is anyone visiting the west coast now that can grab me a cab like that and drag it to the midwest???

I can't attest to the parking brake, but I swapped a 72 cab on my 70 and I just ran down to the local parts store and grabbed the little ball stud to put on my carb. All you have to do is connect the new linkage to your carb, it aint rocket surgery.

I added a FAQ about converting from the rod-type pedal to a cable-type. Pretty simple to do.
I completely removed my parking brake also. I might put it back in later, but I just don't care for the hand operated one!!!

I paid $750 for the truck this Feb. Since then I've put no less than 25,000 hard working miles on it with nothing major happening. Most expensive thing I did to it was new tires. I figure it's earned some attention!!! I'll try and get some pics of the bed that was on it later today. The floor was almost completely gone.

I live in the Plainfield area. I'm actually surprised you haven't seen me running around on the east side. Did lots of work over there this year. If you saw a junky looking green 71 K20 with a utility trailer behind it that was me!!!

wow!!!!!!!!! can we say rust belt truck! i've taken trucks in better shape to the junk yard. what kind of shape is the frame in? also if the cab doesn't have rust above the windsheild cut the roof off and sell it on the board there are plenty of people on the board who could use it.

When you get a cab,if it`s a low trans tunnel floor,you`ll want to keep that area of the floor from your 4wd.Fortunately this area is usually well "greased" and rust-free.
