Anyone ever used there A/C compressor for air bags - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

My buddy is a mechanic and he was telling me about this yesterday,
is he full of it or what, since the ROADSTER will not need A/C it may
just be worth it to try it, would keep the install a lil cleaner since I
wouldn't have to figure out a place to mount me a pump, thoughts?

You may have heard of "engine driven compressors" that are commonly used to run air systems for bags on 2wd's and air up tires, etc on 4wd's. These are actually a/c compressors. They were OEM on various older veihicles like Ford, and Jeep. The are a very square compressor unlike the typical round a/c compressors.

There is a major difference between them that makes them compatable for this application. The York compressor have a sealed oil reservoir to lubricates the compressor. Most round (or radial) compressors are designed to run a wet system. They require oil to be in the refrigerant system for lubrication.

Due to this design, the common GM compressors will not work. If you want to run an engine driven compressor, you will have to adapt a York compressor to your motor.....

What they use for an air pump, 4X4's, is the chrysler style A/C compressor. It can be converted easily but i didn't pay a lot of attention how. Jeep magizine probably has the tech article, or look under off road boards too.
Not to try to sell you anything but I have that style compressor, it was used for add on air in the old days before the sanyo compresser. I have it on a 72 burb with P/S. I am going with factory A/C. Compressor with brackets and pully's. Pm me if interested..........

Thanks trux, I too have heard the GM one won't work, the Chrysler
one mentioned above is the one that was reccomended to me also.

You need a York 210 or 209.

The Sanden style pumps that are on GM's are the ones everyone is referring to.
