Not sure if this thread belongs here, but......Has anyone ever bought one of those fiberglass cowl hood scoops, and used it on our trucks? I see that they come with flanges on the edges so you could rivet and fiberglass into place. That would be a cheap cowl hood, if it would work. I see that they are around $70.00 in J.C. Whitney Cat. with a 2" rise......anyone with a picture of it done?

Just a thought.......

I know a guy that took a $150 scoop and installed on a 64 Impala. Some thought it was a true cowl. Its advertised in most car mags.

Yeh....just wondering how it would work on our big hoods as far as holding up and not cracking, if done properly.......

I think it would look fine if done by an experianced body person,
however I am not one, so by the time I paid them it would come
close to the New* price that you see them listed in online sites.

*However if you get one from a Vendor at a Super Chevy Show,
you pay no tax, no freight, and you get a Board discount, I did.

Steve, get that thought out of your head!. I went down that road even though I was advised not to. I used a Harwood on my last truck that looked bad @ss for a few months. It was riveted and glassed over perfectly. Then it started to crack

. I had it repaired and repainted by another body shop who said I'm wasting my time and money. It cracked again and I eventually sold the truck. The vibration and hood closing really takes it's toll.

ALL fiberglass to metal bonding will crack - it is just a question of when. The metal and the fiberglass expand at different rates when heated, so cracking will ALWAYS occur.

If you want one that will last a long time, get either a complete fiberglass hood or a complete metal hood (goodmark has all-metal cowl induction hoods, $400 or so).

Makes since then. That's why I was checking on here. Years back I installed a pro scoop on my friends race car. Never cracked, but then it wasn't driven all the time either. Guess I'll just wait when I'm ready for a cowl hood.

I installed a fiberglass L88 scoop to the hood of a nova I had & it never cracked. You have to make sure its done right though. On my 84, I bought a wrecked SS chevelle hood & cut the scoop out of it & welded it into my stock hood. It turned out good & it was a HECK of a lot cheaper than a complete cowl hood. Just my .02...

I dont know if your pressed for time or not but maybe look for a used one. But that would be like winning the lottery though

Has anyone used the speed center hood scoop? Looks like it wouldn't be to hard to do.

Yep, what he said. I have a '66 with those two raised lines that go from a point all the way up the hood. I like the look of those line but want a cowl hood too. Been thinkin about finding a used hood in the junkyard and cutting a section out of the middle and making my own cowl hood by fabbing it into my original hood thus keeping those lines. Would take a lot of welding and time but would look sweet.

Like 70c10swb said, finding a used one would be great. That's if I could fine it local. Shipping would be a killer. I'm not that crazy about doing any welding on the hood, because of the heat and once a hood warps, that's pretty much the end on that hood. I'n not that good of a welder. Maybe a pro could do it, but then, we're getting into the price of a new cowl hood itself by the time it's completed.

I'm waiting for someone on here to say, "Hey, Mr. Cheap-O" just buy the whole cowl hood and be done with it.......lol

come on....let's here it !!! hehehe

this speed shop cowl said it is a 20 guage metal cowl and you can use the metal bonding adheasive. Will that work having the metal to metal and "glued" instead of welded? I have a hood in great shape if someone wants to trade for a cowl hood?????

I would stick with an "All One Peice" hood.No regrets are worth a liitle extra money.Also,no labor.The hood could be cut/braced,welded/molded.But,to do this right,you`ll be looking at thecost of a new cowl hood.Unless you`re a fabricator that does your own and doesn`t count his time cuz it`s a hobby.Get one next spring at a swap meet.Contact the vendor in advance so he`ll bring "YOU" one and talk about a special "Show" price.That`s as cheap as you`ll get.
