Ok... 700r4 Tranny Swap Questions,,, Revisited

I know we have been around this one a few times but it seems to be a good topic and gets alot of interest.

Not having done a 4speed to 700r4 swap, here is what I think I know so far.

I am running the sm465 tranny and the Np 205 case.

-I am told that I should look for a 1987-92 700R4
-I have purchased two kits from Advance Adapters that mate the 700R4 to my existing T-Case. 1)the Shaft Kit and 2)the actual adapter.
-Two methods to make room for the extra length in the tranny are either move engine forward or move the T-Case back.

*I am leaning toward moving the T-Case back but I would like to know if there is any modifications to the T-Case shift linkage in order to have it work normal in the factory location in the floor?

-I am planning on installing a factory tilt column, but I have not been able to get a confirmation if in fact the factory tilts do have enough travel in the shift lever/linkage for the extra gear position? I have heard both that it is no problem and also that no it will not work.

-I have also heard that you can buy a shift linkage that eliminates the factory linkage. It goes direct from the column to the shift arm on the tranny. Has anyone used this? I have heard it is very clean and makes the shift linkage much better in terms of play and so on.

-I Have also heard conflicting stories on whether to look for an actual 4x4 Transmission or not. 1 story is that the 4x4 cases are a bit heavier than a 2wd tranny. Also there is something about the flywheel dust cover on a 4x4 (I think it is much heavier as well)

-And at last, is there in fact an additional cross member that bolts to the tranny which is between the engine and the rear cross member under the tranny/T-case adapter. I am assuming that on an automatic truck it has 2 cross mebers under there unlike my 4speed it only has the one.

Thanks in advance for any input on these questions.

Curt

Re: Ok... 700r4 Tranny Swap Questions,,, Revisited

I took the engine trans and transfercase out of my 86 Suburban and installed it in my 3/4 ton 4x4 GMC everything was bolt in I had to drill new holes in the frame for the transfer case mount and shim it down, shorten and adapt the drive shaft, I have a tilt colum and just bolted up the linkage it works fine and I have all the gears, only real problem is the factory spedo cable is not long enough to hook to the 86 transfer case, the burban was 3:54 gears the truck is 4:10 so once I do hook it up I will probably have to change the gear in the T case. http://12.215.122.222/newtrans.htm

The TV cable was not a problem since I used the factory bracket off the burban, I still have to verify the TV adjustment and will take pressure readings before it goes back into daily driver service.
