Re: how do you tell if

If it a daily driver go to a wrecker and pull a HEI and buy new plug wires and put her in. If its some what of a hotrod look at Pertronics.com or the other brands -Accell , Mallory ,etc

Re: how do you tell if

to change points youll need feeler gauges and dwell meter pull the points grease the back of new points where it touches the shaft put the points in loosley bump engine around till one of the high spots line up perfectly to the back of the points where you greased them put in feeler gauges not sure about the gap youll have to ask someone else that when you know put in that thickness tighten them down points will have a allen head bolt under the door on the distributor cap when its all back together hook up dwell meter set to specs by turning the allen head screw that sounds confusing but it only takes about 15 minutes i use standard ignition parts a little pricy but will last longer i know a couple places i could get you hei for reasonablelet me know probly 25 or so i work in winston 5 days a week maybe we can get together

Instead of bumping the engine with the starter, put a 1/2" ratchet and socket on the crank pulley and slowly turn the engine, this will be faster and much more precise. I think I set mine at 0.019"?

Re: how do you tell if

You can go to many new parts stores and buy HEI's for $100 new or rebuilt.. Junk yard prices are usually about $25-45 for HEI's. Some A-holes at junkyards try to rob everyone. IF they only new they were shooting themselves in the foot.

Re: how do you tell if

I guess i am lucky...I refuse to pay 25 for a junk yard HEI, and I can get them all day long. If you are carefull and smart about it, you can get a brand new cap, rotor and coil in there too.
MaybeI should start getting these and e-baying them huh?
