Question I need help identifying my front axle!!

I have a 1969 chevrolet K-10 I have had the truck for about 2 years I used to drive it daily, now I have parked it to complete the frame off resto, and now that I am looking for parts I need help finding out which axle I have. I have been looking through a couple of 67-72 specific catalogs and the only front axle parts available are for a dana 44. which has upper and lower ball joints. But the axle on my truck has like one large ball joint......I dont know how to describe it where the axle meets the hub it is one large pivot ball.
How can I determine which axle I have?

!969 was the last year of the 'closed knuckle' design.1970 was the first year of the 'open knuckle' but was still drum brakes. If you want to upgrade, now would be a good time to look for a 71+ with disc brakes.

Re: I need help identifying my front axle!!

It is still a Dana 44. Some 1969 trucks have it, some don't. My '69 K5 has an open knuckle D44.

Parts as you are realizing are hard to come by, I agree with the above swap it out. 69-70 (drum) or 71-72 (disc) is a bolt-in. 73-77 (disc) is also pretty straight swap. 78-79 might need new brake lines (some have corporate 10-bolt with 10mm fittings), 80-91 need new brake lines. From what I understand the steering components and springs all line up on the front axles.

Re: I need help identifying my front axle!!

When looking for parts, go with a '68. most parts books have the king pin style of front axle starting in 69...

i found some parts thru Nrthland Truck for the seals & shims... all the bearings and like, i just took the numbers in and matched...

it's not a bad axle IMO... however, there is no way to keep water out of it... you will have to drain & refill the axle everytime you go thru water...
