About how many miles will it take to break-in a new engine?

Generally, you mostly hear about 500 miles to break in an engine. This is without hotrodding (to most people anyways) the engine, and without staying at too constant of a speed/RPM for very long. A drive around most of town should cover the types of driving. (i.e. various speeds, some fast, some slow, slowing down, etc) That would be my advice anyways, just go every speedlimit in town, just don't rod the hell out of it for a while.

with modern parts. break-in as it was known for years doesnt really exist anymore. a higher lift cam needs a proper 20 minute breakin but by the time thats broken in the rings should be seated. if they arent theres a problem. nothing else really should wear.

I've noticed some of my newer engines or rebuilt should I say ran great, did not smoke but did use a little oil until they got 3-5K miles on them. I do think there's a little settling period.

i wouldnt be to worried about break in. If it was done right, get that engine fired up, follow the cams break in procedure, get some heat in the engine and put it to work. last thing you want to do is glaze the cylinder walls and slobber oil through. If the rebuild was properly done you will be allright.
