Factory Tach dash question

Ok, the question is more about the wiring harness than the dash. I pulled a tach dash out of a '76 GMC this past week and the harness. The connector that clips to the distributor ran to a condensor on the fire wall. This is the first one like this I've seen before. I've got a couple other tach dashes and none of them had this condensor. I'm just wondering what is the advantage of the condensor? Does it filter out any voltage surges from the coil? Why wouldn't the others I have, have this same part?
