Throttle Mod Question
Anyone ever done a modification to have the 71/72 firewall mounted gas pedal on the inside of the cab, but run a throttle rod on the engine bay side?
My 69 has been modified to have a cable linkage assembly, but I prefer the rods. To me the feel better, but I kind of like the idea of the pivot point on the firewall. Figured I would start here to see what great minds have thrown together before I go into the deep think-tank mode.

Re: Throttle Mod Question
I'm sure you know this but here ya go anyway... the cables were incorporated for safety reasons. I've never really noticed a significant difference, cable vs. linkage rods. Sorry Bill, my reply contains no useable information for your "brain storming".

Re: Throttle Mod Question
Go to the tech section there is a great post where a member shows step by step with pics how to do it without having to weld. I am getting ready to replace rusted floor pan and was thinking of making the switch. check it out

Re: Throttle Mod Question
Pound41, yes I saw putter's mods, which if I stay with cable I'll be doing.
Sweet72....interesting. I had never heard that mentioned before. Seemed to me that it would be the other way around for safety. Thanks for the input.

Re: Throttle Mod Question
Palf, it is in fact for safety.
When the old style motor mounts break 9which they were prone to do) then the engine would lean to the passengerside, and where ever the throttle was at the moment the mount snapped, that is where it stayed for a moment. Since they normally break when you take off, the throttle would be stuck down a bit further than you woulda have wanted. There was a recall for the motor mounts, and the throttle cable upgrade was done a couple years prior. I agree with you on the better responce of the rod. To make this even better you can use sperical ends (heim joints) on the ends of the rod. |

Re: Throttle Mod Question
I had forgotten about that. Now it is making me rethink. The 69 already has the later style motor mounts and towers. Now I gots to think some more on this change. Not the input I was expecting, but very useful.

Re: Throttle Mod Question
When the motor mount breaks it doesnt just stick the throttle, it pulls the pedal to the floor! It's a very disturbing sensation having the gas pedal disappear out from under your foot and the car accelerate on its own.

Re: Throttle Mod Question
Early Mustangs used a firewall pivot rod linkage setup. I removed it from my '67 rustang when I did the 5.0/5-speed swap. You might try adapting something like that. Just don't let anyone know where you got the parts

Re: Throttle Mod Question
Bill, A friend of mine cut the rod of the 69-70 style under the dash and welded the end of the 71-72 rod on to it.
Allowed the 71/72 firewall mounted gas pedal on the inside, and the throttle rod on the engine bay side
