67 wiper wiring... any experts??

Hello -- !!

I'm new to this forum and am hoping to find a little expertise here...

I've been installing a Ron Francis wiring kit that I bought ten (yes 10) years ago. Everything has been going pretty well and the engine, headlights, turnsignals, and brakes are all done and work very well.

The problem is with the wiper motor and switch. The Ron Francis wiper switch will not work and the Ron Francis "tech support" cannot tell me how to make it work because they don't know how to wire it in. They say they cannot tell how the original switch functions because they can't figure it out from the wiring diagram. (Neither can I, but you might think they would know more than i do)

Here is the crux of it: Can anyone please tell me a quick and dirty way to connect the five lugs on the wiper motor to pos and neg so the wipers are at least minimally functional?? I don't care about the washer pump or the automatic parking feature, I just need to have the wipers working -preferably on high speed-so I can drive in the rain.

My mother lives in Los Angeles and just had a stroke, so I had to drive it down here from my home in San Jose. I have my wiring tools but forgot to bring the wiring diagrams in the manual, so if you can please help me figure out what lug goes where maybe I can make it home in one piece..

Thank you and best wishes,
Steven Dahout

Re: 67 wiper wiring... any experts??

Hello Krue -- !!

Thanks for your quick response I'm printing out the diags for my toolbag.

One quirk about the stock '67 wiper motor is that it comes wired with the switch on the negative wiper leads instead of having the switch control the positive leads. It took me a while to figure out that having the wiper motor always hot allowed the self-parking feature to work. (the service manual explains that there is a switch INSIDE the wiper motor that keeps the wipers going until they reach the park position)

Before I left on this ugly trip I tried hooking up the five wiper motor terminals in every combination I could think of in hopes of finding the hookup that will make the wipers slap back and forth. My only success was getting the blades to park, not wipe. (burned out about twelve 20amp fuses during this exercise, so i have yet to figure out how to make these things go but I'm going to keep trying)

If there is anyone out there who knows how to connect the five lugs on the wiper motor to make it work, I'd REALLY appreciate it if you would share your knowledge because this thing still has me stumped...

Thank you again, and best wishes,
Steven Dahout

Re: 67 wiper wiring... any experts??

Give this a try....
Yellow wires at the motor are the 12v+ wires. (Wire leaves fuse box, then runs to motor, then jumps to second pin on motor...see picture)
The Dark Blue wire (when grounded) is for the WASH feature. (It's the wire closest to you in the photo)
The Black wire (when grounded) is for HIGH speed.
The Light Blue wire (when grounded at the same time as the Black) is for LOW speed. (It's the wire that is in the background in the picture)

Hello Krue, Putter, & Yukon Jack -- !!

Thanks a million for all your help guys... ^^!!!!^^

Putter, these photos are *exactly* the kind of info I was looking to find. I'll be messing with it over the next couple days when the sun is up. (Moms house has no computer or access so I have to drive to the Cerritos library to get online)

Thanks again and best wishes,

Re: 67 wiper wiring... any experts??

Hello again -- !!

Success!! (with a small adjustment but who's quibbling)

Thanks to the help I've received on this **OUTSTANDING** board I finally got the slap-slap back into the wipers. THANK YOU ALL -- !!

Here are the details:
Hard wired in the yellow wire as pictured in the photo which was easy because it was almost like that from previous attempts. Instead of going right to wiring a switch in, I ran a negative jumper to that area to see if the wipers would work. Touched the end of the jumper to the topmost lug where the black wire in the photo goes... small sparks but no wipers. Touched the jumper to the other (center) lug in the set of 3 and bingo... wipers!! Self-parking wipers too I might add. So I wired in the Ron Francis switch as a simple on/off in a neg wire to the center lug and its done.

This must be high speed because there is only one grounded lug, but it seems a bit slow. Maybe I'll try to hook up low speed sometime in the future but for now I'm plenty happy.

When I was searching online for a new factory style switch, I did run across at least one vendor who sold wiper switches for 68-72 and another switch for 67. Maybe the 67 is different from the rest of the genre which might explain why the motor hookup is a little different than in the photo... I don't know for sure but if anyone is archiving the info on this it might be worth noting.

Thanks again for all the help. This place is GREAT!!!

Best wishes,
Steven Dahout

Re: 67 wiper wiring... any experts??

Welcome to the board. I too am having wiper problems but it's the park position that stops in middle of windshield. I wonder whether 67-68 wiper motors are different from 69-72, I swapped a motor in from a 72 and it stops in the same place. The 68 motors are mounted 90 degrees from a 72 motor, so that's why I think there is a difference.

Re: 67 wiper wiring... any experts??

I honestly don't remember, but can you remove the actual wiper arms and reposition them so that they stop at the right position? I can't remember if they have a keyway slot cut into them or not....but I want to say they don't. Worth a try anyway.

Re: 67 wiper wiring... any experts??

putter, if you did that, then the wipers would try to go clear down past the cowl onto the hood.

Ask me how I know this...I never did get the ex to ignore the scratches going from the windshield to the hood on her s 10 blazer.

Same thing for me too. Light Blue wire grounded by itself got me some working wipers.

Now, if I ground the black in conjunction with the Light Blue will I get high speed wipers?
