Exclamation Pricing Help

I have spotted a 71 or 72 Chevrolet 4x4 SWB Pickup in a nearby yard. It has been sitting for quite some time (I first saw it approximately 2 months ago... who knows how long it has been there before that) and obviously doesn't get driven. I am going to talk to the owner, and see if I can get him to sell it to me. Since it's only a few days before Christmas, I'm hoping that he will be more inclined to sell.

It seems to be in at least rolling condition (It sits level, and nothing seems to be missing) – possibly even in running condition. I don’t know whether it is an automatic or manual. It has 4 inflated tires, but because they have been sitting so long, they are probably not any good.

I am wondering how much I should offer this guy for his truck. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I was thinking maybe $500 if it runs and $250 if it doesn’t. Let me know what you think!

I don’t know much about old Chevrolet trucks, but this may help; it has 5 orange lights on the roof of the truck (along the windshield… like you see on late model heavy-duty trucks) and the side-view mirrors are the larger rectangular kind with the big metal triangle frame things – sorry about the lack of proper terms.

Thanks again!

2 the board from west 10-uh-c

W/o pic's it is hard to price, but if it's a 4wd and it's a swb $500.
Also if it's a true 71 or 72 it will have disc front brakes, a/c is a +
other things to look for are tilt, buckets w/ console, am/fm radio

The option sheet on the glovebox door would tell us more if you
can't get pictures, also which areas are rusted out, if any are

Re: Pricing Help

Well, since it's in the mans front yard (among other vehicles that don't move), I'm not exactly going to get pictures easily... and you KNOW I'm not going to get the option sheet. It doesn't look too bad though, a little ruse here and there, but there wasn't anything that really stood out. Like I said, I could definately tell that it was olive and white.

But, I thought that $500 sounded fair myself.

Thanks so much for the help and th welcome, LUV!

Re: Pricing Help

Sounds like a rare truck to me! If he lets you check it out be sure you check the windshield area for rust, especially since it has roof marker lights on it. Are the lights round? If they are they're factory, and if the glovebox sticker is still there they oughtta be listed on it. And make sure you check for a factory tach and/or vacuum gauge in the dash.

Re: Pricing Help

Welcome to the board.

Around here a truck like that woulf bring in $1000 if it didn't run and 1500-2000+ running. But a guy would never find a (original) minimal-rust truck around here, either!

Re: Pricing Help

people have given you a good list of what to look for, this is always good to know, so in the worst case scenario you can part it and at LEAST break even. The body seems to always be the biggest issue, transmissions, axles, and even engines are relatively easy to replace and inexpensive if you hunt around a bit.
Good luck, and if you get someone to bite on $500 for a swb 71-72 4x4 with a rust free body, I will give you $600 for it!

Re: Pricing Help

Thanks for all of the help! I think I'm going to talk to him today. I'll let you know the outcome.

Paul: Yeah, these trucks are not too rare where I live, it's a VERY small farming county... old Fords and Chevys are EVERYWHERE (but the neat thing is, nobody really drives them anymore, so they just sit arround). So, if anyone lives in or near Virginia, and they want me to do some hunting for them, just let me know! I know of at least 2 67-68 SWB 2WD stepside trucks laying arround within a mile of my house! So, with a little free time and a nice clear day, I'm sure I could find plenty more.

Robert: Why is a Tachometer and Vacuum guage so important? Not trying to be a jerk, I just don't know...

Again, thanks for all the help guys!

Re: Pricing Help

Welcome to the board and good luck getting the truck. Factory tilts and tachometers are sought after parts - lots of trucks didn't come with those options.

Re: Pricing Help

Good luck on your purchase. 71-72 4x4's are getting harder to find. Save it if you can. Post pics and you'll get alot more detailed knowledge from these guys.
