Re: what an night!!!

Sounds like the voltage regulator or alternator. Take it by a parts store and let them test them to make sure.

Re: what an night!!!

One thing I learned in automotive class was to never assume a new part works correctly. They do come broken, just like anything else you buy. Not saying it's your problem, just don't overlook it.

Yea, I always say you haven't bought a part unless you've been back to the store a couple of times.

There's a small wire coming off the pos side to that junction box. Mine was old and worn and wouldn't even crank. Changed the wire and haven't had any problems. Still running the voltage reg and generator. Changing over to alt and new distributor soon.

Re: what an night!!!

I had a sticking regulator on my 66 3/4 ton that was draining my battery, replaced it with a new one, same deal! Third one was the charm. If it were me though, I'd definitely swap over to the internally regulated alternator. I looked through the FAQ board and didn't find the post, but I'm sure someone here can chime in with the link.

Re: what an night!!!

You said that the radio was hooked to the junction block. It has a memory circuit, and that circuit consumes power all the time. Did you guys sit in your truck and listen to the radio, while waiting for the tow truck?

If you want to find the source of the "short", be sure you have a hot battery before starting the following procedure. With the battery disconnected (one terminal only), pull one fuse to eliminate, let's say....the tail lights. When you reconnect the terminal, look for an arc, or listen for the sound that the arc makes when you touch the terminal to the post. If so, then the bad circuit is somewhere else. Keep pulling fuses until you find the circuit that doesn't make the arcing (flash/sound) when you reconnect the terminal to the post.

You might be amazed at what you find.

This is similar to the way I use. I disconnect one terminal, and put a test light between the disconnected terminal and the battery. If there is a draw the light will light up. Then you can pull fuses, when you pull one and the light goes out then you know which circuit it is.
