Angry @#%* Oil Filter

Im either really dumb or really weak. The oil filter on my 67 wont come off... It is clockwise to remove isnt it? No telling how long its been on there. I put a hole in the stupid thing trying to get it to budge. I put the filter wrench on it then put a visegrip on that to tighten it, put 1 foot on the frame for leverage and still couldnt get it to move! 1st pic of wrench, 2nd of leaking filter...Any good way of loosening it b4 I set fire to it?!? thx

I think you need to turn it this way:

Gosh damn my lysdexia. I'm just not gonna try anymore
It needs to turn from right to left, or counterclockwise

Re: @#%* Oil Filter

Now that you have it on there real tight, you might benefit from a craftsman strap wrench. Of course things are already dirty, so poking a "man sized screwdriver" through is still an option.

Re: @#%* Oil Filter

You need to think about which way you would turn it to tighten it...and, from under the engine, you'd reach up (with your right hand) and turn it from the front of the engine, toward the left (drivers) side of the vehicle. Just take your hand, hold it as if you were holding the oil filter, fingers up, and move your hand as if you were tightening it. Now, to take the filter off, you know that it turns the OPPOSITE direction. When you are under the truck, and looking towards the back of the truck, it's easy to get disoriented. Same thing happens to me, whether it is the filter or the drain plug.

Just wait until you are older, less agile and more forgetful. There will come a time when every move will be counted and you want them to work right.

Re: @#%* Oil Filter

Imagine looking or actually look at the bottom of the filter from below.
Turn it counter clockwise (anti-clockwise for our commonwealth friends)
If really tight hammering the biggest screwdriver you can find through the canister works great..

Re: @#%* Oil Filter

After you get done with all that, you willl probably end up tearing the can off the hub. The hub (threaded part) has several small holes in it, I had to use a long drift (punch) and tap the hub in a counter clockwise direction. It will come off eventually.

Re: @#%* Oil Filter

Well thx for the info yall... I still dont have the damn thing off! I have now literally destroyed the filter with no way to get any kind of grip w/o crushing it even further! You think I could do a simple thing such as this but NO! Ive been working on this ONE THING since 3:00. My time is now spent and I have to go to bed so I can be gone for 2 days in Oklahoma... Maybe I can pull the engine to get better access to the filter (half-way serious). Things like this are so damn frustrating I dont even know where to begin!!! The worst thing is that I can devote 2-3 hrs every OTHER week to my truck and I just wasted all that time over something that should have taken no more than 10-15 mins. Sorry about the rant but Im a little ticked at myself...

Re: @#%* Oil Filter

If worse comes to worse you could always get one of those big pipe wrenches that use a big bicycle type chain to grip the pipe when you pull on the handle..........shoot the handle is about 2ft long so it oughtta come off with that kind of leverage!! A lot of guys that work with pipe or have worked in the oilfield will know what i'm talking about.

Re: @#%* Oil Filter

I think 67chevyredneck was playing a cruel joke on you. You need to drive a heavy duty screwdriver through it now and hit the handle of it with a BFH so that you are turning it counterclockwise if you are laying underneath the filter looking up at it. Gradual force will not do anything for you now you need to give it a real sharp whack. Use the screwdriver method. Punch it through as close to the top of the filter as possible but at least 1.5 inches below the top of the rim so you clear the boss inside it.

Re: @#%* Oil Filter

Ok yall, Im going to bed. Ill be back on the board Thursday sometime to check in. As soon as I get that !$%# filter off, Ill take a pic of the low down dirty filthy beast with which I will tangle with again and eventually destroy to my infinite delight and pleasure. Once Ive done that, I will drink to the end of that filters life! ShinerBock for all!

Re: @#%* Oil Filter

This reminds me of trying to change the oil in the wifes 99 mazda 626. I couldn't get that one off either. I crushed the filter in half with channel locks then did the screwdriver trick till I almost rippied the thing in half. I used the channel locks again on what was left of it and it finally came off. It took awhile of cussing to get that changed.

After that I gladly took it somewhere. Damn foregin crap

Re: @#%* Oil Filter

When you put the next one on, remember, it only needs to be snugged up with your bare hand.
My father always told me if you can't take the filter off with your hand then the guy that put it on shouldn't be changing oil.

'Step away from the vehicle!'

Re: @#%* Oil Filter

Another thing... when installing a new filter, you are supposed to put a light coat of clean oil on teh gasket, this is why. It keeps the gasket from getting stuck on the engine.
Also, in all reality, with the gasket lubed, you are supposed to spin it on untill it is against the housing base, and then another 1/4 turn, there is nothing at all wrong with tightening it more. Your filter is not stuck from over tightening it, it is stuck from age/lack of oil on the gasket.

Re: @#%* Oil Filter

I peeled one down to the base plate one time, and I had to use a 1" cold chisel and a 3# sledge to get it off.

The best thing I ever found for removing a sticky one was a Lisle oil filter wrench that had a flat spiral band that wound around the filter body & squeezed tighter the harder you turned it. Never failed me, but the filter body has to be intact. Naturally, they don't make them any more , but I think the 3-legged device posted above is what they replaced them with.
