Heater removal question.

Do you have to remove the passenger side hood hinge to remove the factory heater box? I'm replacing my stock heater with an aftermarket a/c unit and was wondering if there is a trick to getting the old one out.

Thanks,

Rob

Re: Heater removal question.

If memory serves right, I unbolted hood from hinge. And then took out back bolt from hinge, and just loosened the front one. Allowing it to swing out of the way.

Re: Heater removal question.

Rob - I don't know about the hinge but I think you have to drop the innner fender to get one fastener undone.

Re: Heater removal question.

On an A/C truck, I know I had to drop the inner finner, but did not have to remove a door hinge. Hope this is helpful.

Edit:

You know I couldn't figure out why this idiot was tryin' to remove the door hinge to get to the heater core. Now it's clear to me: As usual, IM the idiot. Hood hinge makes MUCH more sense.

Re: Heater removal question.

When you say heater box, assuming you mean heater core, depends on whether you're talking about an AC truck or non AC..... If your'e talking about a non AC truck there's a great write up, with pics, on the FAQ message forum and it would be removed from the engine bay side of the firewall as described above..... on an AC truck the heater core comes out from inside the cab.

Re: Heater removal question.

I just partially took mine(non-AC) apart 2 wks. ago to clean the leaves out from around the heater core with a vacuum hose. I took the bolts out of the hood hinge so I could slide it forward a little out of the way. This allows the fan assembly to be pulled out, otherwise the hinge blocks it's removal. I didn't take out the inner fender, but if you are removing the heater core, it does look like removing the inner fender will allow much easier access to one of the heater box retaining nuts. I found a write up about it by Longhorn Man in the FAQ forum, but I couldn't get any of the pictures to load. Seems like my '67 was easier to do. I used to take it apart in about 15 or 20 minutes to check the core every couple of yrs. and I never did remove the inner fender well.

Re: Heater removal question.

Hinge has to be moved some or removed, but I have never had to drop the inner fender to get one out. A 1/4 drive swivel socket and extension, don't remember size, will get that bottom outside one off. If your arm is skinny and long enough you can get wrench on it from underneath though the fender, but that is much harder.

Rob
Hope you don't mind me asking. What brand after market a/c are you installing and are you going to do it yourself?
I am looking at the same idea and need help deciding.
Thanks
Chris

Re: Heater removal question.

Either Vintage Air or Classic Auto Air. I haven't decided yet. Here are a couple of links to the install:

Re: Heater removal question.

I would love to know how it turns out. I think I'm going to yank my perfectly good blower and heater core this week before leaving town. Am I right in assuming I don't need the blower anymore?

Also, what do you get to remove internally by killing it? I guess what I want to know is ... can you get rid of that big bulbous box under the radio that blows the vent onto the floor and all of the crap behind the glovebox?

I'd love to see pics of everything you gut from the inside so I can decide if I want to do this...
