Re: Old Tools What is this ?
It looks to be circa 1700's....Early wood drill....the opening on the top was for a board (similar to a 2x4) to be inserted through it so that you could apply pressure to it by leaning into it with your chest.....

Egg Beater......
Seriously though,I find it interesting that the teeth dont go all the way around the drive gear. Seems to be designed for a back and forth motion not a full rotary motion like a drill. Last edited by screamin_c102; 12-21-2005 at 03:42 PM. |

Re: Old Tools What is this ?
If there are not 360 degrees of teeth on the main gear, indicating that the only use of the thing would be to make the shaft move in a back-and-forth rotation by a similar back-and-forth rotation of the crank handle, it almost looks like an old valve lapper. ... for lapping in valves into the cylinder head (or, in the case of a flat-head engine, into the engine block).

Re: Old Tools What is this ?
It is indeed a drill. If you look closer, the flat section is recessed below the teeth, and there are 3 patches of teeth that look to be at 120 deg to eachother. It will go all the way around...after the last tooth passes on the top the first one on the other side is just coming into engagement. If you had to cut teeth with a file or whatever back in those days, would you not just cut only what you need and not all 360 deg?
Being smart is not necessarily being lazy.

Re: Old Tools What is this ?
Good point, Opper. Its the little swivel attachment of the working end that makes me think its a valve lapping tool.

Re: Old Tools What is this ?
The teeth are in sections so as to make the bit go back and forth as you turn the handle. There's a gear at each end of the teeth and it only hits one set of teeth at a time makeing it change direction. the lapping tool has my vote so far.
Thanks for all the input.

Re: Old Tools What is this ?
It looks like a tool we used to use to make rope. Maybe we were using an old drill to make rope, I was only 8 or 9 years old at the time so I really can't be sure.

That was my thought, a rope winder.
Older than internal combustion engines is my guess. |

Re: Old Tools What is this ?
As others stated... It's a valve lapping tool. The teeth are set up to use the handle in any one of three positions but in a back and forth motion. It looks like it might be missing the piece that sits on the valve... Here are a couple ones similar to it:

I think the guy who last did some daily driver body work for me uses these tools.

Re: Old Tools What is this ?
Sorry guys - I missed this post !
That is most likely a valve lapping tool , missing an attachment . It would alternate direction and lap the valve seat . There are some like it that were used as paint mixers in the old days also . Judging by the old carpenter tools in the picture , that would be my guess as to what it was used for by the owner . Definitely "old school " !

Re: Old Tools What is this ?
Looks like something used for the valve lapping, or the seats.
But they had something similiar to this not only for rope winding but for the wire cables...
