Need help,No power

I have a 67' k10 with a 350 in it and it's been mainly sitting for the last year.Been torn up.It was started off and on but not driven very far. I had the carb rebuilt about 14mo ago and it ran really good then.I also put new plugs in it.It has fresh fuel in it now. It starts prety good, and runs decent in 1st and 2nd,but 3rd and 4th have no go.Tops out at arount 30-40mph .Doens't seen like I'm getting rpm's either. Engin was supposedly rebuilt within the last 10k but who know hpw many years ago that was.I have owned it for 2yr and it ran good when I bought it. Any help would be appreciated.

My first thought is the fuel filter.

Re: Need help,No power

How long has it been sitting before you started it this time?
Did you drain the float bowl(s) and flush with fresh gas?

Re: Need help,No power

I wondered about the clutch. If that's all it is I'd be very happy because I'm installing my 5spd very soon and will have a new clutch installed anyway.
I will check the fuel filter.
It's only been sitting a couple weeks but I never did more than drive it around the yard and back into my shop. Yesterday I took it out for a mile of so and noticed it having no power.Today I took it back out and the same results.I adjusted the timing a little but that didn't change anything.

Re: Need help,No power

It's not starving for fuel.If anything it's getting a little too much. It seems to rev to an extent,in neutral you can rev it up,It seems to just kinda die out about 35mph or so.Kinda guessing on mph because speedo is disconected.

If you say it doesn't seem to rev.... then it won't be the clutch.

Re: Need help,No power

It sounds to me more like a spark advance problem. Remove the dizzy cap, disconnect the vacuum line to the dizzy and put suction to it with your mouth. Hold the suction and see if the advance holds or moves. With vacuum, the spark should advance and hold as long as there is vacuum and should return to normal when you release the vacuum. Check your vacuum lines first. If the advance slowly moves with constant vacuum, you have a bad advance.

Re: Need help,No power

Thanks for all the idea's.I'm going to try to get it looked at soon.I was figuring it was probably in the distributer but I don't have any experience working on them.

Re: Need help,No power

It is HEI. I changed the coil and the cap for starters. Now the truck won't start It looks like I'll have to take it to a mechanic who knows more about electronics than I do.

Re: Need help,No power

See if the truck is getting spark. Pull sp plug wire and put it towards the frame. Have someone crank the motor and see if there is a spark.

Re: Need help,No power

A buddy of mine has the same problem with a Torino he stored for the winter months and only started occasionally.
His problem was MICE. They had built a nest in the tailpipe right up next to the muffler. Started and idled fine but the first time he took it out on the road it had NO power.
He brought it back into the yard and proceeded to rev the bejeepers out of it,
and all at once there was a big POP and out flies this big pile of yarn and straw and crap all over the lawn!
I laughed so hard I thought I was gonna puke!
The whole time he is running around trying to pick this junk off the lawn I am giving him crap about how his furd is now down about half his horsepower because he just killed off the most powerful parts of the vehicle!!
Point of the story is don't overlook the possibility of an exhaust restriction.
Merry Christmas
Mike

Re: Need help,No power

I have seen that exhaust restriction before. It was very funny when all the dead mice and their nest came out.
I finally got it fixed When I changed the coil and cap I had hooked that single wire up wrong. The one that plugs into the side of the cap. I got to messing around with it and thought I'd switch it around. Now it runs awsome, except that it idles way to fast.I think that is timing adjustment. Thanks again for the help.
