OK folks, I need some help. The rims I have on the panel have locking nuts. I know I hung onto the key for years but, I’ll be danged if I can find it anywhere. I ended up pulling the whole front end today, tires and all for my new IFS but… I’ve gotta get those rims off so I can put them up for sale.

I tried taping an impact socket on...no bite. I even made a couple of tries clamping a set of vise grips on a tapping with a hammer…no good. I didn’t spend a whole lot of time on it because I wanted to get other things done today.

I’ll give anything a whirl short of applying a torch. Oh by the way, if the photo is not good enough, it's the type that the notches are down around the bottom edge, not the grooved top.

Go to a tire shop, they usually have a tool for removing locking nuts.

I might have to. It'll be a pain in the rectum though...I'll have to load my whole front end up in the back of the truck!

i work at a tire shop..but i cant tell what kind of lock it is from the pics..certain locks can be removed pretty easy by hammering an old junk key on to the lock and it will usually bite. but there are some that are a lot more difficult..

I have used a socket before. One that almost fit over the lug but not quite. Beat it on with a BFH and that usally worked. Your local auto parts store should sell a lug nut splitter that might work depending on the rim. Also if you have a welder weld a big nut to the lug and then use that with an impact to remove. I would go with the socket idea... but DON'T use an impact socket, they are usually 6-point. You want a 12-point socket, hopefully 1/2" drive (that way you have a bigger hole to slide a punch through for getting the nut out of the socket once it's removed).

look man all the big tool companies like MAC and snap-on sell a socet set just for removing stripped bolts and wheel locks get a set or even one that is the right size and i promise u wont be dissatisfied

Maybe. I don't have one so, it's hard to tell until I lay one on there. After pricing extractors this morning (roughly 70 bucks), I'm going to try the 12 point socket route.
I've got other things I'd rather spend my money on!

LIke bigbuc said, there are tools out there JUST for removing lugnut locks. Buddy owns a junkyard, and he has a set of them, saves alot of time, and sometimes rims. If you get heat on them and aren't careful, just ruined a set of rims.....

Got the solution at HF today, just didn't get one big enough... today was not my day. 18 bucks for the set. I'll hang onto these, no telling when then might come in handy. I'll pick up the next size up.
Tomorrow's another day though!

They're off! I found another set of nut extractors. The 3/4 fit it just right. A ratchet with a cheater pipe and no problems.
I had to buy a set of five to get the one I wanted...22 bucks.
Well spent though.
