Does Pertronix Need a Full 12 volts?
The gentleman who owned my truck before me installed a Pertronix electronic ignition under the stock distributor cap. Also he installed one of their FlameThrower coils. I'm doing some upgrades on the wiring and I must double check that this ignition is hooked up correctly. Should it have a full 12 volts to it?, or should there a ballast resistor or resistance wire?
I'm sure there are members out there running this same ignition. Does anyone still have the instructions that came with it? ![]()

Mine is hooked right up to the coil for power... Not sure of the voltage it gets though,...

No Ballast, A good gauge of wire to ignition start amd run.

It depends on the unit. I have run 2 Pertronix conversions.....the 1st was a lobe sensor, & needed a ballast resistor. The last 1 was a "flying magnet" setup(the thing basically triggered off a magnetic ring bolted under the rotor). This one runs on full battery voltage, & really works nice.....I really didnt like the 1st setup .

My igniter 1 is hooked to 12 volts with no resistor or ballast .... works great

Wouldn't it depend more on what the coil wants ? Any Chevys I have seen run the resistor wire or a ballast to the coil, reducing voltage to around 8 or so through the points and coil. IIRC Pontiacs used full 12 volt to the coil, but were a "resistor" coil design, still allowing only 8 volts through the points and coil. Now you are eliminating the points, but I think the coil still need to be fed what it was designed for, else it could overheat.
