windshield gasket
New windshield gasket is leaking bad. (surrounding windshield metal is perfect). Installer wants to cut this one out and install new one. Who has any recommendations for brand and supplier? I know board vendors sell some good stuff. The one in now is made by Precision from board vendor. My preference would be to pull this one, clean and reinstall with good sealer. Installer wants a new seal. Anyone know much about brand Soffseal?

I heard it was the best. I have both front and rear, but haven't used them yet. Good Luck

Re: windshield gasket
DO you happen to have part number for deluxe windshield gasket for a 72 from Soffseal?

Re: windshield gasket
Mine leaks badly too. I talked to an installer the other day while he was out replacing the one on the Cabriolet though, and he said that in order to seal it, you need to seal around the glass inside the bead. Said thats where most of them leak because the seals are so sloppy anymore. I'm going to try some sealer on mine as he said they won't touch them. This was a Safelite guy. Jeff.

Re: windshield gasket
9918-with chrome.
The catalogis listed at soffseal.com I've heard a lot of differnt things about the gaskets and installation. Classic Trucks Magazine ran a good article on removal and installation about 3 years ago. You might be able to pull it up at classictrucks.com Ohterwise, when I do mine, I'll use lots of silicone and zinc chromate tape allaround the metal edge.

Re: windshield gasket
From what I have been told and from what I have seen it is virtually impossible to get the chrome strip in the gasket after it is installed in the truck. But its probably been done.

Re: windshield gasket
Ditto, from what Classic Trucks wrote the chrome has to be installed before the windshield goes in. The windshield, trim, and rubber then go in as a unit. You'll need helpers, silicone, and some rope.

Re: windshield gasket
Not so sure some of the fitment problems are all in the rubber, put a made in Mexico glass in my 68 and and after 2 different gaskets, first was from LMC unknown brand, and second was precision, both look the same, I'm starting to think the glass is a little whacked. Maybe repro glass fits like some repro sheetmetal ???

Re: windshield gasket
Green Machine. You bring up a very good point, and it wouldn't suprize me one bit that the glass is slightly different. I've heard numerous times of people attempting to install the original windshield after doing some collision work or body repair and they always seem to break the glass. Maybe the originals are slightly bigger all around and fit tighter in the seal??? Just a thought!

Re: windshield gasket
Where I work we use a local family owned glass co. to do all of our glass work, and they swear they never use that "imported stuff". They say it does not fit the same and there are differences in the construction and manufacturing process. I'm sure it's like everything else now days, there is always someone willing to make it of lesser quality and less expensive.
