great day!!!!

hi all,,well it's one of those good day,bad day thing's..got my 76 k-10 stepper out of garage for the FIRST time in 2 years, lotta motor work etc..make a long story short went about 30 miles and it sounded like someone thru a metal sledge hammer in a wood chipper is the only way to describe it.thought motor came apart but didn't..got it to side of interstate and she won't move so it's either tranny or transfer case.question i got is there an easier way to figure out which it is beside's the obvious tearing them out??? it's got the TH350 tranny with the part time 203 transfer case..everything had new oil and fluid it them,,ran the transfer case in gear for awhile to oil it,,,never even got a chance to see what it would do!!! lol..thanks for any help...

Re: great day!!!!

I assume there is a reason you think it's not the rear end, but if not I would start there. I would pull the rear cover and check it out, it's easy to do.
I am not familiar with the 203 but if you can drain the oil I would do that, and look for any metal. If you see some metal you have a good idea that your problem is there.
The tranny would be my last guess, but you never know.

Re: great day!!!!

I had the same problem about ten years ago. The rear was fine but the trans was wasted. I didn't put the engine in a buddy did and he didn't seat the convertor properly. It tore up the front pump. I agree, pull the rear cover, pull the transfer drain plug and then pull the trans pan. See what falls or drains out and go from there.

Re: great day!!!!

The 203 is a full-time case, unless it has been modded to part-time.....

Dumb question, did the t'case shifter get bumped by chance?

Re: great day!!!!

thanks for the reply's..

71sw,,never thought maybe rearend, was just crusing along and the sound and feel kinda all come from the gas pedal area, which at first made me think motor...

doc,,,i tried all 4 wheel drive gear's etc,,,there is nothing,,not even reverse,,
and it is a 203 converted to part time,,manual locking hub's..

makes sense though to drain each pan,see what come's out,,right now i wasn't even thinking enough to do that...lol

Re: great day!!!!

If fluid inspection doesn`t show anything definate,I`d check into the torque converter.Does it just sit and rev or is it bound up?

Re: great day!!!!

You`re talking about the shifter for the trans?Sounds like cog dropped out.The clunking and grinding was probably the sound of it falling to the bottom.

Re: great day!!!!

US111,It`s pretty straight forward.Seperate thet-case from the trans in the truck for easy handling.Replace what seals you can get at on both ends. The seal in the slipyoke area for sure.
