Need front drive shaft info..

I have lifted my blazer 6'' and the front shaft will fit but it will not rotate cause the yoke bolts hit the shft ears did these front shafts come with a c-v joint on the top from the factory mine does not have a c-v style yoke just a regular yoke like the back shaft.. Btw blazer is a 72 with a 44 front..

Yes, it came with a double cardan ("CV") at the transfer case end from the factory.

Re: Need front drive shaft info..

My 67' didn't have a CV shaft buy my brothers 67' did. .That is one thing most of us forget when we lift out rigs.I did some grinding on mine to get me by until I got a CV one.

Re: Need front drive shaft info..

Even switching to a CV jointed shaft will not guarantee the fit with-out grinding. There are usually travel limiting tabs on the castings. They are small square bumps on the end of the joint where the center casting meets the driveshaft. These can be ground down for clearence...but be careful, a little goes a long way and too much just weakens the joint. It is usually in the 6 to 8 inch range where this starts to become an issue.

Re: Need front drive shaft info..

My 69 K20 didn't have a cv and with just a 4" lift it was too short. Had it lengthened and then when I installed it, found it would not turn - back to the shop but luckily they cut me a deal on getting a cv installed. I was feeling like an idiot when I brought the driveshaft back to them.

Re: Need front drive shaft info..

Don't mean to steal the thread, but a question for Yukon Jack. I just did almost the same thing on my 68 (with 4" lift also),
splines were shot on the front driveshaft (which is not a CV style). So, I finally got around to getting it repaired and now with no play in the splines, the front shaft will not rotate by hand....bummer. Trying to get the daily driver fixed up a bit and keep running into little things that end up costing big bucks...guess that's the name of the game though..otherwise what would keep things interesting...ha
anyway...trying to decide now whether to install shims to rotate the axle a bit, or pay the bucks to have the CV added to my shaft ?
So, did adding the CV joint to your shaft take care of the rotation problem on your truck ?

Re: Need front drive shaft info..

my truck is a 79 but the transfer case is a 70. what i did to fix basically the same problem was change teh front output to the newer style with the square flange. that was cheaper than a new driveshaft.

Help me out ...
I guess I am unsure of what you are saying?
If I understand correctly...you changed the output yoke on the transfer case ?, didn't you then have to use a different drive shaft as well ?

Re: Need front drive shaft info..

yes. i changed driveshafts i had one in the garage that was the correct length. i guess if you dont have the other syle one laying around it wouldnt be cheaper for you. sorry about that im not sure what i was thinking. thats why its good to have a brother in law who is a mechanic and keeps everything.

Yep, adding the CV joint did take care of the rotation problem. The guy who did the work was real cool and sourced a good used CV joint. When I took a different shaft in, it turned out the CV joint was not rebuildable - too damaged they said - and they put together a new CV joint driveshaft - it was pretty dang expensive! Hopefully if you get a CV, it won't be too expensive.

Re: Need front drive shaft info..

Good deal.. thanks for the help..good to know that should take care of the problem at least.
Ya, a new CV shaft is big bucks unfortunatly...I may do some salvage yard looking to see what I can find...as I assume when you go with a CV shaft you need a different yoke on the transfer case as well ?
If I do need a new yoke, (I think I read that you have a Rockwell TC , same as mine)....where did you find a yoke to fit the TC splines and the CV shaft ?

and to Stan79 chevy....thanks for the reply...I wish we just had even some salvage yards with lots of parts lying around here. Much less a brother in law..your lucky. I am the one around here that doesn't throw anything away...unfortunatly just haven't been around 4-wheel drive stuff long enough to have much...any idea what the shaft and flange that you used was out of ?
