Oil Pressure?????

Got a small block in my truck and was driving it the other day and it started tapping and carry on, lost oil pressure. So I had it towed back home since I thought it was gone. Went to start it up today and the oil pressure is back and hasn't done much or make any noise. The oil pressure went up and down a couple of times but it acts as nothing happen. Bad oil pump, or main? Or needs to clean it out with a flush of some short?

You checked the oil level?
How long since last oil chainge?
It may be a gonner, but I'd start with the simple stuff first.

Re: Oil Pressure?????

a lot of times when that happens its a loose pick up tube on the oil pump. it will bounce up and down while driving and destroy your bearings in the process of dropping oil pressure.

I've seen smook clog the screen, till you shut the engine off. Once shut off, the smook will fall away from the screen and oil pressure will return. Then later, it will eventually get sucked back up and do the same thing over again.

Lots of mid 80's Ford V8's did that. Nothing says fun like laying on your back pulling oil pans either.

Re: Oil Pressure?????

you will notice a loose tube most when stopping like at a stop sign, had a 66 GTO that did that. Is your oil filter plugged?

Re: Oil Pressure?????

Just replaced a motor in a company truck for the same thing. The motor was so clogged with coked up oil that the oil would build up in the top end of the motor until the pan was dry. Wait a few minutes and start it back uo ant the oil pressure was back.
