New Hood ornament for a 68 front clip
What do y'all think?
The truck will be flat black. This will be sandblasted and chrome powdercoated. Last edited by FormerMember; 10-04-2007 at 06:35 PM. |

Re: New Hood ornament for a 68 front clip
If I was going for a 67/68 clip for my 2 wheeler, I'd be huntin' one. That's nice.

Re: New Hood ornament for a 68 front clip
Literally that... powdercoat that's chrome. Cheaper than actual chroming, has a slightly more matte finish and is more durable.

Re: New Hood ornament for a 68 front clip
I`ve just never seen any powdercoat finish refered to as chrome.I`d like to see some of that.I guess it`s more durable as far as not rusting goes.

Re: New Hood ornament for a 68 front clip
55 Chevy.........the one on the 56 has a much shorter middle "tail" section. Plus the mount stands under the wing tips are not there in 56. That is definately a 55 piece.

Re: New Hood ornament for a 68 front clip
Question, while talking about hood ornaments. 2 years ago at the Decatur swap meet a guy had a 67 hood oem that has a chrome cap over the ridge about 2" long. Looked like it was made to protect the very tip of the hood ridge. I have never seen another like it and could have bought it with the hood cheap. Anyone know about this add-on or maybe factory protector?

Re: New Hood ornament for a 68 front clip
RE: Chrome powdercoating....I don't want you to think that I'm shooting down your idea for it, but having just had some wheels powdercoated, and hearing what the business owner had to say, made me think about it.
A recent, maybe the latest newstand, issue of Classic Trucks or Custom Classic Trucks, has a Chevy in it that has chrome powdercoating on the front and rear bumpers and some other trim items. It is better looking than the "bumper chrome" paint that comes in a rattle can, but it isn't chrome. You really want to check out the choices that you find for the chrome color powdercoat. If you are looking for the shine that chrome has, an alternative may be the cobalt-process of chrome plating. This is the process that can plate plastic, as well as metals. It isn't the same chrome finish that we have on our bumpers, but it is "more environmentally-friendly", than the chromium process that will be harder and harder to find and afford. Here in central Arkansas, we have one plater who has been grandfathered in, because they have been in business so long. Still, I'm looking at ~$180 to plate a bumper. I didn't price the cobalt process, because the owner said it isn't the same. He also doesn't want to compete with the other business for chromium-based plating. Both processes are electro-plating, but the chemistry is different.

Thanks for the information. I've seen a few pieces and I like the look. You know it's not chrome, but somewhat muted. That's the look I am looking for. Worst case, I don't like it and bead blast it again, starting off at ground zero again. Last edited by FormerMember; 01-08-2006 at 08:11 PM. |

Solver, is that a single headlight on your GMC? Hard to tell from the pic but if it is...it's the first that I have seen.

Re: New Hood ornament for a 68 front clip
Yeah, but getting parts for mack is a PITA. They don't let anyone else make there stuff, many fuel and oil filters are even 'mack only' items.
Real PITA to work on. |
