1972 Windshield Gasket with Chrome - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

My recently purchased 1972 C10 needs a new windshield. I called around and got someone to come out with a windshield and gasket with a channel for the chrome strip. The guy said that the job was going to be too hard to do out on the street and that a shop job would be required. Then he left.

I called a higher-end glass place, and they said that unless they could use the original gasket, the chrome would have to go. They said that the gasket that they use doesn't have a channel for the chrome strip. He went on to say that the aftermarket gaskets with the channel , that are readily available, don't work well and they would not mess with them, leaving the channel-less gasket as my only option. I called the dealer for an OEM part, and they are discontinued.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Sounds like they don't want to mess with it to me. I have the same situation, and I had mine installed by Apple Glass in Houston. The aftermarket rubber worked fine with the stainless steel trim. No problems. I suggest you call around.

Keep phoning around.

I had a glass put in and they used the original rubber which ended up leaking. I bought an aftermarket rubber with the trim groove in it and the guys said they would take the window out and reinstall with the new rubber as warranty work. I get there and the guys at the glass shop whined about how long it would take and how hard it is to install so I need to leave it for a complete day. I was not able to leave it that long so it goes back next week.
Like anything these days, it is a little harder to do so no one wants to do it.

I called one of the restoration body shops, which I plan on using for finishing my body work, and they recommended an independent guy. According to his scheduler, he should be able to do the whole thing with a new gasket tommorrow for $220. I'll let you know how John's Autoglass (Austin TX) works out.

I had "Safelite Auto Glass" install mine with the rubber that excepts the chrome. I had to buy the rubber, as they only carried the rubber that didn't hold the chrome. They also told me that the rubber I have is not good and tried talking me out of the chrome one. I just don't think they wanted to do the job, cause it did take a little more time to do. They did it anyway, and didn't leak and looks good. They charged me $165.00 for the windshield and labor. It was going to cost me $210.00 if they had used there rubber. That was for a tinted windshield......

No one would do my son's either, so we did it ourselves. Wheeeee was it a job but came out ok (so far).

I had the windshield out of both of my trucks and when they were put back in they both leaked. Both of them have the chrome trim. Maybe I just have bad luck or something. If you really want the trim, buy a gasket and sooner or later I'm sure you will find someone to install it.

heck,i did mine by myself,it didn't seem too hard,but it did take a little time,just use alot of lube(soapy water) and a string,take your time,and it should go in w/out a problem

If putting onein is as hard as getting the chrome out without messing it up, hats off to you Jhow! It's been hit or miss for me with having windsheilds installed without leaking. I do agree with some comments above, a quality gasket is worth getting and hard to find.

im a glass installer,have been for 12 years,these trucks suck to put back in with the chrome...what most people dont seem to understand about leaks is that regardless of the gasket used(new or old)..it still needs sealer between the gasket and the body and between the glass and the gasket...9 outa 10 times they will leak if ya dont...most shops dont want to install the chrome,they just dont want to take the time,thats why they tell you the gasket for the chrome isnt available...they are lying....its just the way it is there isnt any money ion spending more than 45 minutes at any one job...

I haven't found anyone that will R&R my windshield after checking with dozens of places. Most just don't want to deal with extra work invlolved with these trucks. If anyone knows of someone in the Nashville area please let me know!

Ya know, it sounds like a few of you guys have had positive experience with the R/R, by just taking your time, and using the correct parts and tools.

Is there a chance that someone could throw together a good FAQ with pictures to show the best way to install one by ourselves?

I see guys reporting every day on here about other jobs they did on their cars that looked Waaaaay harder than doing a WS properly.

Sofseal makes that rubber for the windshield in either version (with or without chrome) and they make good rubber! Check out sofseal.com to order.
Classic trucks magazine ran an article about 2 years ago removing and replacing a windshield on a 72 with chrome. You might be able to search the site and pull it up to print out at classictrucks.com. It really didn't look that bad. Probably the most important thing is getting a couple of helpers and making sure they know exactly what your trying to do, and that the trim has to be installed before the windshield goes in. If it slips out you start all over. Classic trucks used silicone and rope.

Windsheilds Are Not That Hard To Put In Either With Or Without Chrome (actually Stainless Steel). As Long As You Have Lots Of Patients, Plenty Of Lube (either Silicone Or Dish Soap). I've Put In Several, & Have Never Had A Leak, & Haven't Used Any Sealer Yet. It Doesn't Take A Genius, & There Is Nothing Magical About It. If You Saw The Pimple Faced Nimrod Kids That Were Born 15 Years After These Trucks Were Built, Working In The Local Glass Shop Here You'd Probably Decide You Could Do It Yourself Too. Just Remember... It's Glass.... Don't Force It & It Doesn't Bend Or Twist Worth A Sh!t.
