What Supercharger should I buy????

OK so I'm looking at superchargers for my BB402 and I was justr wondering if anyone has any recomendations. Also I;m thinking of going fuel injected what FI works good on a 70 BB402 that will handle a supercharger and 400-500 HP??? I don't want a roots style supercharger thats all I know....I'm thinking of the vortech but what about the FI?? Thanks.

ps I did search...

Re: What Supercharger should I buy????

Cuz Its cool.........no Its just been what I wanted to do to the struck...that way I can get even more HP if I want to crank the boost up......And I don't see dumping 10K on a motor build up and loose all my drivablity...I'm using it as a shop truck so yeah.

Re: What Supercharger should I buy????

This is the SC ^ I was thinking off, as far as FI goes tuning a FI setup with a SC is deffinately tricky and not the faint of heart, Holleys Comander 950 is capable, I am sure there are a couple more out there as well. But you really dont need a SC on a big block to make those type of numbers.

Agreed, the 671's and up are just too damn big, the 177 fits under the hood

Re: What Supercharger should I buy????

i like the style your looking at (centrifugal [sp?]) nice ad hidden under the hood. I belive you can use it with fuel injection, just change the intake tube, not sure so dont quote me on that. Plus you can intercool it for some extra ponys

Re: What Supercharger should I buy????

D1SC Pro Charger w/innercooler on a 402 big block and 500 hp should be EASY. I recently did a study on this for my Nova and found that with my 350 and RaceRite heads i would be able to go into the high 600's for HP on 91 octane with the D1SC and an innercooler. The Pro charger aint cheap and the innercooler makes it more but id reconcider my goals here. 500 hp would be fairly easy N/A with your 402BB and some oval port Brodix RaceRites and a well thought out combo...If you have to do the Pro Charger then why not shoot for some real power say 675 or so. I bet it would still be VERY streetable.

Thumbs up Re: What Supercharger should I buy????

I would definitely consider a supercharger on a truck at that power level. The mega-low-end torque would be great for towing! I would love to do that project some day.

400 hp and 600 lb ft of torque from a mild motor would be really nice in a truck!

^^^^^I like you!

Thanks for all the input so far.....I don't want a ROOTS style like the weiands....I havent finalized the internals yet (little more research)so when
I get done it will probally have 600hp who knows...But I need to be able to drive it 300 miles with a car trailer and my Nova on it, thats why I'm not building it all motor (I get better milage with a SC )

Re: What Supercharger should I buy????

Go big and underdrive it, 6-71 atleast... or put a intercooled centrifical on it... The smaller street blower produce alot of heat when they are underdriven at all. Go twin turbo....

Re: What Supercharger should I buy????

Deffinately go with procharger. If you want only 500 ponies, you wont need the aftercooler. The centrifigal will allow you the gas milage because it really wont kick in at low rpm, whereas the roots style has to be working ALL the time and will draw Huge amounts of fuel.
I have used Vortec before, and although it is a good unit, their technical help is abysmal at best. Stick with Procharger, call them, youll be glad you did.
I have just finished a 454 with an F1R procharger and an intercooler pushing just 10lbs. of boost... thats an easy 800hp. 12-14 lbs. would take it over 1000... but that is STUPID HP. Yes, I may try that 12lb pulley;.>.
Let me know if you have any Qs, Ive already done this.
PS, this motor is going in a 2wd Jimmy.
Good Luck, Tom

Re: What Supercharger should I buy????

There's alway Nitrous?! Drive around with a 300-400hp and pust the button into the 5-600ish hp range and it works excellent with FI. I have three BBC powered trucks and I'd do that before dumping $2-3 G's at it. NOS has kits in the $500 range and with a well built bottom end you'll have near infinate life on your hardparts and when you don't want/need the power it is not a constant drag on the motor. Only a button push away, spray, spray, SPRAY!!

Re: What Supercharger should I buy????

Wow, I guess only REAL men throw money at Blowers?! Are you for real? If you're a man build 500+hp on motor and deal with the drivability!! You asked for opinions, don't lambaste guys with alternate theories. Power is power, but if you insist on doing it the hard/expensive way then more power, but bottles are for babies, get real?!

I have Stacks of envoices here at my business, wouldnt you know it, that one is not here, so I cant give you the number today.(its probably with the owners manual in the box with the blower)
Pro Charger makes a large variety of centrifigal superchargers, mine is designed to get an easy thousand horsepower for the street out of my particular engine. It is a big block chevy blow-through carburetor system by the way; however EFI will work great too.
500HP is no sweat, even with stock heads and pump gas. You dont need an F series blower for that; maybe a D1SC would be good. I suggest you go to their web site or better yet give them a call.
You might be interested in a short article in Chevy Rumble magazine, Feb 2004 back issue pg.8. If you cant find it online, I can probably scan it and email it to you at a later date... that computer is in the shop.

Re: What Supercharger should I buy????

I am just finishing up my project with installing a supercharger from procharger. I puchased it from the supercharger store. Terry there was a great help in deciding on what I wanted and needed. Instead of the incooler you can also do a methanal injection system which is cheaper than the inercooler. It does not sound like you will be going crazy on the boost side so the intercooler is not needed. Here is there http://www.thesuperchargerstore.com/ (If I can not post this I am sorry and we can delete it). When I get home tonight I will send you some pictures of how it is installed and how it looks.

What compression ratio are you running, and how much boost? I was also wondering what your running for times in the 1/4 with it?

71Dragtruck, I am running 10.1:1. I have it set up with the 8lb. pulley for now. I am just finishing up the supercharger and a long list of other items. I am hoping to have it running and dyno it this weekend. I have some wiring for my new gauges to complete. If not this weekend it will be next. I just got the motor together before labor day. I drove it around for a week ( about 100 miles) and then ran it at the labor day drags here in Spokane, WA. I ran 12.90 on 26 x 8.50 slicks I borrowed from my friend. I just ordered some bigger slicks for this year. It should run better when it breaks in. My friend that has the dyno and help me put this together along with the guys at the supercharger store and procharger say with my motor and supercharger it should be around 700 horsepower and high 10's. With my set up they said I can run up to 12lbs of boost without hurting the motor. I am also running the MSD boost retard system and a methonal injection to help it run cooler. I am guessing you will be in the same area with your new motor? What gears and rear end are you running? Are you going to have to put a cage in your truck to race this year? I love the looks of you GMC. I am glad to see more of these trucks going fast.

I got the master cylinder from this site.http://www.abspowerbrake.com/
It is the same style that was put on Copperhead on the show Trucks. It takes the place of the power booster and master cylinder. It is supposed to give you up to 2200lbs of pressure to the fron discs. It is a demon carb. It is the mighty demon 850. We had to do some changes to it for the supercharger. You would be happy with the Procharger. There customer service has been great. Also, the guys at the supercharger store were fantastic and a wealth of knowledge about these.
