Drove my project home last nite for inspection

Last nite, I drove the 1967 4x4 white beast home for the first time, and started it in the cold this morning. I noticed lots of things I never had before. Tell me what you think
It has bias-ply knobby tires on right now and has been sitting for some time, so I expect some bumping, and rough ride. What I hadn't quite expected was a lot of what felt like bump-steer. The P/O let me know that it needs tie-rod ends. Could this be the source of the bumpy steering or the tires, or big problems.
I noticed small rust holes under each of the vent opeinings, uncovered more rust in the bed, and rocker panels. I haven't peeled back the rubber mat and sound deadener, but expect to see more rust there. The floor feel solid, but that is not the same as rust free.
The clutch seems to engage all at once. I have lots of pedal travel, but at one point, there doesn't seem to be any slipping, just engaged. I drove my dads 71 k10 for years, and don't remember the clutch acting like this. This morning in the cold, I had a hard time getting it to shift into neutral. I could get it in all 4 gears, and reverse, but when I let the clutch out in neutral, the engine lugged down. Cold gear lube? Transmission problem?
The truck drives fine in 1st (granny) and 2nd, but has a miss, and it is dreadfully noticable in 3rd, and 4th. I expect that I'm just at too low of an RPM, and this amplifies the effects of the miss. Truck has set for 1+ years, so it is possible that I have fowled plug, or bad wire. Just haven't gotten to that yet.
The arrangment is $1000 for a running pickup. The P/O has replaced the mastercylinder, and put in a new starter to get it to the point it is right now. Do you think I'm getting in over my head or thowing my money away? I've told my wife that if I buy the truck, and find it has more that I can fix, I'll put it on e-bay. Do you think I could make my money back?

Looks like you did very well. Truck looks saveable from pics. Also looks like a front and rear 3.73 posi. Your front bumper and grill guard setup is a nice item too. Put a few hundred into it with good overall tune, lube, tires and wheels and it will make you proud. Also lift front end up and do front steering and suspension review. I like the pic with the older owner signing it over. I like them that way, untouched and good history usually.

Looks like a decent deal. Body is straight and only minor rust. I suspect a considerable amount of rust in the vent area, which is common. The bumpy ride could be numerous things but I would suspect the tie rod ends in conjunction with the tires. You better be prepared to spend more than probably what you have in mind, maybe even not consider the cost. I think you could make your money back on Ebay pretty easily. Of course this just my opinion.

$1000 for a running 4x4 truck is a good deal, up here in the northeast we have to inspect a truck to make sure how much rust it has, many truck around here do have a lot of rust and they stilll sell for a lot of money, I've found out that once you start putting money in a truck and try to sell it is hard to get most of your money back.

The engine miss in higher gear @ higher speeds is probably a gas and or filter issue.

as far as the miss is concerned , a good tune up might solve that // new plugs,points ,condensor cap plugwires air and gas filters then set the timing also inspect for dry cracked vaccume hoses while doing the tuneup you can also dump a couple of cans of fuel system injector cleaner into the gas tank while you're at it

I'd tune it up, tires and tie rods, then see what you think. Lot easier to sell it if it doesn't have the easy to fix problems.

I think you did well. I spent 1000 on mine and its a running driving 72 C-10. No 4x4 but it has AC PS and disc brakes. The big difference my floors, supports, cab corners, and rockers are G for GONE!! I think you did well though. I wouldnty worry about it.

these trucks are more about the spirit than the value. if its worth it to you to tear it apart and see how simple and damn near perfect things were in those days, and to enjoy the process. then YES its worth it. if you dont wana get your hands derty and bust some knuckles then....maybe not..good find. enjoy.!

I know a guy that bought a set of Bias Ply tires that cost him 1200 Dollars and The same day he put them on he took the truck back and had them take them off. I dont think I have heard anything good about them. Expecially in a cold climate.
