This will make you sick!!!
I found this picture while looking for a picture of a different truck. This was my first 67-72 GM truck. I paid $3000 for it it about 1992. It was a base 1969GMC short bed truck with the 307 2bbl with automatic trans. It had the rear leaf springs (unusual??) and a 5 guage dash. The truck was in perfect condition inside and out. I added power steering and had ordered an aftermarked "in dash" AC for it when the unthinkable happened. I was driving up I-75, north of Atlanta in the pouring rain and a punk in a Honda in a very big hurry tried to force a lane change too soon and clipped the front end sending me into a spin.I eventually slammed into the back side of a guardrail on the other side of the interstate at about 50mph while skidding backwards. It rolled all the tires off the rims, broke 2 rims off the truck, jacknifed a small utility trailer that I was pulling completley under the truck and basically totalled the truck out. The frame was bent, it broke the springs off of the frame, the battery went through the hood and ther was only one usable piece of sheetmetal left. State farm tried to pay me $700 for the truck so my lawyer had a talk with them and I ended up with $3200...I still lost out!!!

RIP..............
I hope you were not hurt. That story of all the damage and action spooks me bad. That was certainly a good example of a survivor and yes you did loose big time on insurance deal. You probalby couldn't have replaced it for close to that price.

Don't get me started on legalized extortion, I mean insurance! That really stinks about your truck. Glad to hear that you are still around to tell that story! Any chance that was an Atlanta built truck?

For the benefit of others I need to remind everyone that you don't "buy it back" The insurance company doesn't own your truck until you give it up, simply inform them you will be keeping the salvage, and they'll deduct the salvage value from your settlement. HTH

Man, that does make me feel sick, but it doesn't surprise me at all of drivin on 75. How far north of Atlanta were you? That's one thing that scares me bout drivin my truck everyday, combine the stupidity of a lot of the people that drive here and the horrible traffic and you're always at risk of havin one of our gorgeous trucks destroyed by some other fool's idiocy.

Re: This will make you sick!!!
Sorry for you loss, but since you put a question mark behind the leaf rear springs, I'll answer that for ya. All GMC's came stock with leafs and all Chevy's came stock with coils. You could have either truck optioned with either suspension or a mix of the two. I've seen a lot of GMC junkyard trucks with leaf rears and front coils. My disk brake set up on my 67 came off of a 71 GMC with coils. I've only ever seen a couple 1/2 ton chevys with the stock rear leafs.

Re: This will make you sick!!!
THat is not entirely acurate... but it is the trend.
Many GMC trucks had coils, with no mention of it on the SPID (option sheet). I've actually seen leafs optioned on a GMC. Chevys did have coils as base equipment with leafs optional, anf the GMC's were more likely to have leafs, but not always, and not always by option. |

Re: This will make you sick!!!
ouch, that really really sucks man. really really sucks. damned ricers, huh? Tell ya what, I'm just waitin for the day I get wrecked cause of a rice burner, that guy's day will go to hell and back. with detours. Man, I almost got in a wreck today, myself, in my dad's nice Dodge, none the less. Some dumb (I really will try to say this as cleanly as possible) ....female... pulled out in front of my right in front of the school, yappin on the cell phone, not checkin her mirrors or anything, I barely had any time to slam on my brakes, my ABS was kickin my ass (btw, I've never hit the brakes hard enough to kick ABS in on that truck, never) and my tires were probably screechin on that pavement anyways, and this dumb ...female... just kept on going, despite the fact that my bumper was no more than 6" from turning her car into mashed rice.
Man, I hate all them plastic pieces of cow crap ricers, I hate em all, there's no point to the expensive and elaborate coffee can for a muffler, the Boeing 747's wing on the back, the half assed 1-2" lowering kits, the big plastic-as-your-milk-jug body kits, the giant rims, and all that other BS. But I'm just ranting here... what's with all us 67-72board members getting in wrecks/almost getting in wrecks around now?

Re: This will make you sick!!!
I hear nothing but bad stories dealing with State Farm. They are in the news in Washington State for refusing to pay for a woman's medical bills from a severe crash. She was an innocent victim of a guy chasing/raging his girl friend and causing the crash. They were claiming it was a deliberate caused accident????? so they didn't have to pay.
It took the news media and the state insurance commissioner to force them to pay. The state legislature is now working on a bill to make this kind of insurance activity illegal. Duh! About 5 years ago, I had an engine fire in a plain 72 Chev, in my shop, as I just bought it. My insurance paid $4,000 and gave it back to me for $500. A little paint and some wires and it was going again! Good insurance. |
