Hey everyone, thought I would introduce myself and post some pics of my project. I am Bob, and the truck is a '70 GMC SWB fleetside that I have owned for 4 years. I have decided to give it a good overhaul, especially since the passengers door almost fell off when my 11 year old slammed it. A little rust there. The sad part is that I dont have a garage, so all the work has to be done outside in the lovely New England weather. My solution is to remove all parts possible and work on them in the basement. Ya gotta do what ya can...

The grill was painted that way when I got it, I just touched it up a little about 3 years ago. I plan to paint it the body color eventually.

Sweet looking truck.
The painted grill, that is how a 71/72 GMC grill is supposed to look, it's just odd seeing one like that becouse the paint is normally worn off.
That was a pretty good looking truck...at least, at that angle anyways.
One thing I have to comment about, please tell me you plan on getting rid of that flex fan. They are somewhat known for exploding and throwing fins THROUGH the hood.

Hi Longhorn,

The flex fan will go eventually. The truck had a 4 blade paddle on it with no clutch and was a huge drag on the engine. I plan on getting a stock fan and clutch. The truck was a 6 cyl, but one of the PO's put in the SBC with a th350. I tore it apart last year and discovered that it is a 350 bored 30 over with the deck shaved so it has no numbers. Heads are stock of 1979-85 vintage, and it had a 2bbl intake. It had 1 OEM ramshorn exhaust manifold and one chinese one with a crack in it. Only good thing was that they did put an HEI on it. About this time last year one of the lifters blew apart on me, so I tore it down and put in Summit lifters, push rods and cam, edelbrock timing chain & gears, 2nd hand performer intake and carb, Headman headers with Summit turbos an H pipe and brought the exhaust out in front of the rear tires. It runs really well, but only about 8 mpg with the 3.73 rear end

Sounds like a good start engine wise.
Looking at the pics, is this a truck that has been pieced together, or do you know... with the engine/tranny combo coming from one place, 71/72 grill, repainted at one point (I noticed the white on the cab isn't on the door pillars... 67 and 68 were like that, but 69 - 72 had the door pillars and windshield frame painted) and a 71/72 alt bracket to top it all off. I'm just curiouse, my rig is a total mutt, there's nothing wrong with that.

It is definitely a mutt of sorts. I discovered that the original color was orange, and someone did a restore on it quite a while back. The red paint on the bed didnt quite match the cab red. Power steering was added. The detail on the hub caps had been repainted by hand. There is no IDplate on the glove box door, just a blue sticker on the drivers door with the vin number on it. Inner door handles and headliner had been repainted painted black. A lot of the body side trim had been reattached with screws, and there was a cover on the bed at one time....snaps all around the top. I found fiberglass on both front fenders and foil tape under the rot in the area above the windshield. I am going to be busy for a long time........

I have never done any body work before this truck, so I am learning as I go.....at least I hope I am learning!

Hey Bob,welcome.Sounds like you know what you`re doing.New here but not to these trucks.You don`t see many Short Fleetside GMCs.Glad to see another gettin`saved.Are you going all red or keeping it 2-tone?I think it would look good with the grille accented red if it was all red.Otherwise,with 2-tone,I think they look best in original trim.Just one opinion out of 20+ thousand,do it as you like.Enjoy.

What type of carb do you have on it ? The jets could be way too big and causing that 8 MPG. I have gone from 9MPG to over 12 just by changing the jets in my 84. Just some food for thought.

It is an older 600cfm Edelbrock Performer w/manual choke that came out of a friends junk bin. It may run rich, I see a lot of black in the exit pipes. I can get 9mpg if I drive like a granny, which is rare
