Gas tank

Is there another gas tank, other than that used for the back (Blazer), between the frame, I could use? I would like to get the one out from behind the seat, but don't want to put it in the back of the truck. I just don't like the way it looks there. Has anyone used a late model truck tank that is installed in the side of the frame? I'm in the middle of the body work, and now would be the time to do this......any help??

Re: Gas tank

My opinion, and I haven't yet rid my cab of the gas tank, but the aftermarket tanks that fit in place of the spare tire are of interest to me. I have seem just about everything put in the front of the bed of a truck, just to get it out of the cab.

Then, keeping the tank in the cab would stay with my own plan. To use a later model tank, i.e., a saddle tank, may present a problem, but not one that can't be overcome. With the publicity that GM got over the saddle tanks on the 73-87's, which may or may not be warranted, it's interesting that you would mention them.

I didn't answer your question, but maybe it will help by moving it back to the top.

Re: Gas tank

I have been thinking about this same thine for a year now. I have looked at prices and fits and really dont care for most of the prices I see. I finally looked at tanks inc. through Yogis. For our trucks they have some nice options I think.I called about there tank tan-ut for 215 and it will fit square in the frame with about a quarter inch to spare. Just my 2cents but you might give them a look. edin355

Re: Gas tank

I am also looking into tanks. Looking at possibly either buying an aluminum fuel cell or having one made. I've gotten everything tore apart in the back of my truck and I'm ready to drop/fasten a tank in. Just gotta work out the particulars and whatnot.

Re: Gas tank

It is hard to put a modern side frame rail tank in ours. The trailing arms interfer and take up any space. On the long beds, you have the tanks that fit up between the inner and outer sides of the bed, but I don't like the fuel door looks on them. You can gt a lot of style tanks besides the blazer tank to go inplace of the spare and you wouldn't notice it. Your capacity will be way down, 16 or less probably. I have seen them make tanks that fit in the front of the bed also.

Re: Gas tank

where can you get a tank that fits between inner and outer bed sides? Where does fuel door fit. I still carry my spare in the original place.

Re: Gas tank

Early Classics sales a very clean aluminum cell that is cut down real low. It still fits where the spare did, but its made for lowered trucks - so It doesn't hang down so low -- it is very sharp.
Also, what about a tool box / tank, I've seen some of those that look real good. I've even seen where some fellow made a box about 4" tall, that went all the way across the bed -in the bed- under the rear window, and went back to the wheel tubs. the top of the box was the same corrugated sheet metal like the floor of the bed. so when it was all done it just looked like a step up. I think he told me it held 28 gallons, I remember not believing him, but it could be figured out by dimensions. He had a bed liner sprayed over it, and the end by the wheel tubs was angled downward at about a 45 degree, so you really had to be looking to see it.
I think it goes without saying, but no loading stuff in that bed!!

Anyway thats my $.02

Re: Gas tank

If your truck is a long bed you should be able to get the sadle tanks in there. I have seen several of the camper specials that had (dealer added or factory???)sadle tanks either as an option or that someone had done aftermarket (not sure). The filler necks were in the fender wells in front of the tires. It can be done and is fairly easy to hook up. I have seen those sadle tanks sell on ebay for cheap and I am sure there is an aftermarket size that would fit!! Remember...there is a reason they dont put tanks outside the frame rails any more......SIDE IMPACT.

Re: Gas tank

Krue,
I don't, I seen that truck at Pate and I talked to that guy pretty extensively.
He had made some other custom modifications that I thought were not only unique, but great ideas.
This guy has actually cut his cab in half sidways (door to door-not windshield to back window) and added 4 1/2 inches. . . .For leg room... can you believe that. I'm telling you Krue you could not tell. he had used sheet metal from another cab and did a tremendous job.
He extended the frame under the cab. (I would have thought he would have shortend the bed)
he had a full front leather split/bench seat out of a current (04 I Think) burb!
I wish I had the guys number so I could get some pix, but. . .
I have looked for him on the site as well.
