Rebuit Power Steering Pump Problems

I need some help with a rebuilt power steering I installed today. The new pump had a female fitting on the back & my old had a male fitting. I went to town & found a new high pressure hose that would fit the new pump. I now have all new hoses, but the new pump doesn't work at all & makes no noise. I tried bleeding all the air out of the system, But I've gone through 5 quarts of Dexron fluid & it keeps blowing it out the cap & letting the resevoir go low to empty. I took the return line loose at the steering gear & only get fluid out of it sometimes when I turn the wheel. I took it around the block & fluid was all over the underside of the hood above the pump. Should fluid be flowing back through the return line when the pump is turning? I'm thing I've got a piece of junk pump, I'm thinking of getting my old pump back, it worked better. I feel I've wasted a whole weekend with no gain!

Re: Rebuit Power Steering Pump Problems

sounds like a bad pump to me i wouldn't use Dexron trans fluid my 87 f-150 calls for it in the pump but after going though 3 pumps in 3 years i switch over to power steering fuild and its been 2 years and i have not gone though a pump yet. but there should be fuild though the return line when you return the wheel back so that the fuild doesn't run low

Re: Rebuit Power Steering Pump Problems

Thanks ya'll. I had already pulled the new pump & returned it for a refund. I called around & ordered one from Chevy Duty. I sure hope this works out better.

Re: Rebuit Power Steering Pump Problems

The fitting on the pump comes out, is should have plunger and a spring inside. Make sure those parts are there....if the new pump comes with an incorrect fitting, swap them out from the original pump, this will allow you to keep the original type hose installed (just make sure its worth keeping)
When installing a new pump, get the wheels off the ground using a jack and turn them side to side 20~50 times while keeping the resivor full of PS fluid...to purge the air out.
