question for floor shift guys
What are you guys doing about the bell shape shifter assembly on the automatic columns when you go to floor shifters? Anyway to improve the aesthetics of the column? Covering up the shifter and indicator holes? Changing columns? Pics would be great.

Re: question for floor shift guys
Yukon Jack did some mods to an auto column to make it look smooth. Me, I have a floor shift column to go into mine if I go that way.

Re: question for floor shift guys
I too used a "bare" column off a 4 speed truck. I got mine for free I also have a lokar shifter. That thing is sweet. Here's a pic. It kinda shows the column and shifter.

Re: question for floor shift guys
i got a megashifter on the floor, and took off the column shifter handle and gear indicator stuff and left it. i have a tilt so finding a new collar from a manual tilt to bolt on would be hard to do and expensive, and i don't really care to hack up my current auto tilt column.

Re: question for floor shift guys
YOU CAN EITHER REPLACE THE STEERING COLLUMN WITH A FLOOR SHIFT COLLUMN OR JUST REPLACE THE SHIFTER BOWL ON YOURS. IT'S PRETTY EASY. YOU CAN USUALLY PICK UP A SHIFTER BOWL FOR ABOUT $20 & A COMPLETE COLLUMN FOR ABOUT $40 OR $50 JOHN

Re: question for floor shift guys
Here's a link to pics of how I did it - just ground off the offending areas and cut a patch out of a beer can and JB welded it in. Worked real well for me.

Re: question for floor shift guys
I'm planning on geting a new column for mine. How hard is it to get a no shifter tilt column. If you don't want to get a new column, I would just remove the Shifter and indicator off the old one.

Re: question for floor shift guys
thanks for the tips everyone!
Yukan Jack I think will give your mod a try before looking fo another bowl or column, thanks for the pics and info. Did you epoxy the can material on the inside first to hold it in place?

Re: question for floor shift guys
That is a pretty slick way of smoothing up the column. I have a '74 Corvette tilt/tele column I've been thinking about using but I wasn't too excited about rewiring for the column ignition switch. I was thinking about using the column ignition switch for a theft deterent but it only takes a thief about 2 seconds to pop it out with a slide hammer and start the truck with a screwdriver so I really don't think it's worth the bother. All I would have to do is match up the turn signal plugs and I would be good to go.

Re: question for floor shift guys
Anyone know how that shifter bowl comes off? It almost looks like the turn signal switch base needs to be unscrewed because it has a flat side to it possibly for a specialty socket.
