eaton id ?
is there an easy way to tell the difference in eaton ho 52s and 72s just by loking at them without tearing them down?

I believe the only differences are outboard in the brakes and bearing area.There are probably very few HO52 single wheel width axles.Moost 1t trucks had the narrow reap/dual wheels(cab`n`chassis) back then.

An ho52 will be under a 3/4 ton and an ho72 will be under a one ton.
If there are provisions for coils, then it is a 52 if it is a daulie, it is a 72 |

Center sections changed some in 64, but all will interchange from 48-72. Only difference between the 52 and 72 is the width, brakes and spring mounts. Center sections are the same, except in 64 the pinion and ring gear changed, so you cant swap the center internals from a pre 64 to a post 64. Those of us with the older trucks take the newer chunk with 4.10 gears and stick the chunk in our trucks, replacing either 4.56 or 5.14 gears.
