Shot in the dark - Explain my transfer case

Hi,

I know this is a bold shot in the dark, but can you help me identify my transfer case?

I have a '72, K20, 350/th350, 8-bolt wheels with 9/16" studs.

I'm not currently able to look at my transfer to tell, but can you explain some differences in original transfer cases available? This is so when I get home, I can say "Yeah, that's what they were talk'n about" :-)

If it's a true '72 drive train it will be a NP205. It will be a cast iron case. The rear bearing retaining cover (to the right of the rear output yoke) will be aluminum. The shift pattern (front to back) 4lo, N, 2hi, 4hi. Hope this helps some.

Thanks that's what I have. 4lo, N, 2hi, 4hi pattern, and aluminum cover...

Follow-up questions:
The bolt pattern where the tranny meets the case looks to be a square-oval, and not a road-race track pattern (not symentric around the center). I'm thinking of swapping to a NV4500 if I can get the war-dept. (wife) to pony up some cash. I have a non-stock 400sbc in it now. Any gotcha's, neat tricks, major problems that I may encounter? Does the NV4500 marry up to the motor, or is a adapter/new bell housing in my future?

I'm considering going with stock linkage for the '72, and adapting that to the tranny, but I've seen where guys stuck with the hyd. linkage. I'm sure it comes down to preference and maintenance, but what's better?

if it is indeed a TH350/NP205, then it will be the racetrack bolt pattern. a NV4500 won't just "bolt up."

And you can't run a mechanical linkage clutch with the NV4500 without a lot of modification because it's set up for hydraulic. There won't be a clutch arm and pivot point on the transmission.

Which brings me back to one of my questions:
will a NV4500 bolt into a '72 bellhousing?

If you look here, you can see the nuckle/clutch arm hole.

I thought that the NV4500 had an integral bellhousing.

No, it will not bolt up, you have to buy a custom housing from Advance Adaptors that will use your existing clutch linkage
