dana 44hd axle questions?

Can anyone tell me the difference between the 67-70 3/4t front axles and the 71-72 3/4t front axles. I know the pre 71 all had disc brakes, if I got a 71 and up front axle and put it on my 70, what would I be losing? Gaining?

Re: dana 44hd axle questions?

early danas(68-67?) had closed knuckles, good luck getting parts from my understanding. Might have to check wiht some of the 4x4 guys about that.

Other then drums, thats the only thing I can think that was different. I have no idea about other model danas.

Re: dana 44hd axle questions?

I just did the swap in my 67 K20 and it was well worth the time and effort! Sharper turning radius and better braking. Since you already have an open knuckle type axle your turning radius should stay the same. The swap will also include brake lines (hard & soft) and disk/drum P-block.... something to figure into the cost & time of the conversion.

You might want to sell the 70 parts, they are harder to locate than closed knuckle stuff since it was a 1 year only setup.

Shelby987,
to the best of my recollection, the 1971 and FORWARD had disk brakes up front. The year 1970 had drum brakes from the factory, I think??

Any time you upgrade to disk brakes, in my opinion, you are improving the safety and performance of the vehicle. Just make sure you use the proper M.C., prop valve, and vacuum canister.

Re: dana 44hd axle questions?

Didn't the 3/4 tons go to the 9/16 studs vs 1/2" in 71.. don't want to do the swap and find yourself w/o lug nuts :-)
