Drums to Discs Question?
I would like to put disc brakes from a 71 on my 68. Can I use the 68 Control arms? How about putting a booster on. Can I use the existing brake bias valve? What else do I need to consider?

Re: Drums to Discs Question?
But if you take the whole front crossmember from a 71-72, do you have to worry about control arms, etc.?

Re: Drums to Discs Question?
Can you keep 6 lugs while using any 71-72 stuff?

Re: Drums to Discs Question?
you can stay 6 lugs -- there are choices and also you will have to deal with the outer tie rod ends if you retain the 68 steering link--both can be overcome

Re: Drums to Discs Question?
Hate to sound dumb but I want to stay with 6 lugs. What specific parts do I need from the 71' and what else do I need to buy??

Re: Drums to Discs Question?
well you can buy the McNaughy's rotor kit or ------- we are pretty sure that a GMC 88-91 3/4 ton Light Duty 6 lug is the match made in heaven. I know for a fact that a 71/72 rotor fits on the 88 3/4 ton van LD spindle (bearings are the same A5 inside and A3 outside. Just a matter of which caliper to use -- and maybe that does not make a difference either. One good thing is you can take them back to Oreilly's for refund. I have 6 lugs and disc all the way around on my 67.

Re: Drums to Discs Question?
I would try the 71/72 caliper and pads first ---- bearings and seals , 71/72 flex hoses --you need to modify the 71/72 outer tie rod ends if you are using the 65-70 steering link ---see link below
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=188551 And I assume you know you need to use balljoints for the 71/72. |

Re: Drums to Discs Question?
Sounds like I use everything from the 71' except the rotors.

Re: Drums to Discs Question?
let us know how it works out --- I believe the rotor thickness on the 71/72 is 1.25" and the 88 is 1.28" --- if pad clearance is too close the rotor can be slightly shaved -- probably not needed tho

Re: Drums to Discs Question?
Careful using '71 parts, I found out while doing my conversion that some if not all? 71 rotors are 1"...so using 71 calipers on 72 up rotors wont work.
Someone correct me if im wrong here ![]()

Re: Drums to Discs Question?
agree, anything is possible -- I have found that usually the 1 " rotors are LD and take the A6 inner bearing instead of the larger A5 --had not seen this on a 71 oem --but who knows what someone changed on these trucks before we got them.
