I'm in the middle of putting a "new" th-350 in my step fathers 79 gmc farm truck, old tranny was shot, just bolting verter to flex plate and notice that with the converter pushed all the way back on the splines there is a 1/2" gap between it and the flex plate. do I just pull it forwards? also, the haynes manual says to align verter to flex plate the way they were when you took them off, how do I align it if the converter is also "new"? does it matter? Tranny is out of an 83. Looks identical though. First auto tranny swap! Thanks for the help! Besides that I should get motor/tranny slid back in tomorrow.

Yes, just pull it forward. 1/2 inch between is normal when pushed all the way back.

If you have three bolt holes that line up, you're aligned!

Yes just pull it foward to the flexplate and bolt it up. Did you put in a new seal while the tranny was out? Good time to do it.

If there is any vibration, just unbolt the converter and move it over to the next bolt hole, just sort of "clock" it til it runs smoothest then mark the converter and plate.

I agree with Randy on this, You should be fine to just pull it forward, thats what i did when i put in my TH350, and it works fine now.

beauty eh! Just wanted to make sure, thanks for the help! Now I get to slide the whole thing back in by myself using a tractor with a front end loader, hope I don't break anything! it came out fine, I just lifted and shook it enough and the truck fell off! lol just kidding!

Your just kidding about shaking it till the truck dropped? It's kinda fun when you actually do that. Thank god this was in a junk yard when I did it.

If the converter was drained, it would be good thing to add a qt of atf into it before install, and a new front pump seal is also a very good thing.
