Need help with A.C.
I recently bought a '72 BB truck for the motor. I am going to swipe the 402, put in a 350, and sell it. I noticed it has a perfect radiator support in it. I would like to get it but I will have to break the a.c. lines loose. Since the truck blows ice cold air, I can't decide if it is worth it. Will all the freon run out if I loosen the lines? Can I replace it with a cheaper, more modern gas? Any ideas? Thanks

If you loosen the A/C lines then ALL the freon will escape! My advise? DO not get caught! BIG FINE! There are aftermarket gasses but none of them work well or for long! Take it to a Local shop and ask them if they want to trade you for it. Freon is very, very expensive and they may be interested as used freon can be recycled and sold as new! Worth looking into if you ask me!

I removed my inner fender, placed the compressor and lines on the tire. Replaced the engine, without any problems.

You can't change the radiator support without breaking the lines. If you want to break the lines, do what was suggested and have a shop evacuate the lines for you. Freon is one of the causes of Ozone depletion... so do us all a favor and don't let it out into the atmosphere.

I read in Scientific American When NASA sent a satelite to test the depleted ozone areas above the poles the scientific community had to change their story on r-12 It does not deplete the ozone like they thought.
However the wheels of industry were already in motion to phase out the use of r-12 also the largest plant in the world that was producing r-12 in Texas I believe burned to the ground about the same time. The fact that GM, Chrysler and Ferds suppliers were already tooling up for 134 at a huge cost. It was better for the EPA to keep the ban on r-12 and hope the information about their screw up would slide by un-noticed. You will note the big three passed the huge costs of changing over to 134 to the public. I believe that is begining of when everybody was having sticker shock. Early 90's about 1994. The EPA spanked the big three for nothing so the big three spanked us and they still are.

It is not worth it.
The $ markup on a truck with a working a/c is more than a used core support will cost you. Find the core support (new or used) that is in the condition you require and mark the truck up that much minus the labor time to do the swap. Or Make the option available to the someone interested in buying it when they offer you a lower than asking price with the option of them doing the swap. In my opinion: A truck that has a/c but does not blow cold air is going to require some attention, in they way of $. It is one of those mystery things that you have to have equipment and knowledge to fully understand what is going on with the system or money to pay the professional's who make their living doing just this.
