Old license plates, Washington state

I just completed a restoration on a 1967 C-10. I would like to put 1967 plates on it. The state will allow me to do this but thay must have been issued in 1967. I have several sets of old plates around here and I'll have the numbers run to see when they were issued. I also have some pictures of Washington plates. The confusion is the pictures say "green letters on white background" but they don't say anything about when the word "Washington" is stamped or printed. I know the early 60's plates are stamped, my question is when did they stop stamping and start printing "Washington"? Also, I believe that when the old plates are used that only the rear is required, right? Thanks

I've been on that site before. It says 1963-1986, General use, white on green. Again, It does not state when the plates changed from stamped to printed "Washington".

I just put my 1967 c10 in "Restored status" in washington. They had me bring in my plates & title and they made a few calls, and charged me $40.
Thats was it.
I asked them if I get any Perm. tabs or anything and they said no, I was good to go. So I drive around with APE 78 tabs on the back. The RCW says that if you have both plates you MAY put on the front one. Which tells me, that you arent required to run a front plate if you don't want to. Both of my plates were in good enough condition I put them on. Mine dont have a date on them (the plates) they just say "WN" on them. Hope this helps.

I just looked at my 68 plate on the cst , it's stamped Washington on the top . White plate / green letters , mine has the "68" tag in red. I just use the rear plate , as i run the black / yellow Calif plate on the front ( Ca. truck)

I don't really know!
Fortunately they didn't know at the courthouse either. At first, they said my plates must have a date on them and the plates don't, they just say "WN"

They decided to let me use them though.

I just sent in the paperwork for my old Texas plates. Luckily it is easy here because the plates have "TRUCK" and "1969" stamped on them.

My plates are truck plates - TRK. WN. - white with green letters - U12345 - and have 67 tags to indicate the year. I purchased a pair at the Monroe swap meet several years ago and then bought the tags at a License Plate vendor.

My understanding is that in the State of Washington with original or collector plates you are not "supposed to" use it as a daily driver or "work truck" but I see it done all the time. How would they prove it?

Requirements for Horseless Carriage, Restored and Collector Plates



Special Requirements for Antique and Collector Plates
Antique motor vehicles include those vehicles over 40 years old displaying Horseless Carriage plates.

Collector vehicles are those vehicles at least 30 years old and older with either collector vehicle license plates.

A Restored license plate is a Washington-issued license plate designed for use in the year of the vehicle's manufacture. The restored license plate may be used instead of a vehicle license plate or horseless carriage license plate. The license plate must be restored to such a condition that it may be identified with its year of issue. Reproductions of the original are not acceptable for use as a restored license plate.

Antique/Collector vehicles must be:

Owned and operated as collector vehicles, and
Capable of operating on the highway.

Antique/Collector vehicles may be driven:

To and from auto shows, circuses, parades, displays, special excursions, antique car club meetings, and
For testing purposes, and,
For pleasure of others without compensation.

Antique/Collector vehicles may not be used for:

Commercial purposes or to carry a load, or
Regular transportation in the manner of a fully licensed vehicle.

Antique/Collector License Plates, which include Collector, Horseless Carriage or Restored license plates may be:

May be assigned to currently registered passenger vehicle, motorcycles or trucks
Are good for the life of vehicle
Are not required to display month/year tab
Are not renewed annually
Must be displayed on the rear of the vehicle. If the customer provides a set of plates they may display one on the front and the other on the back of the vehicle, and
May be applied for through any licensing office. Customer provides restored plates

If you get collector plates, you get perminent tabs. There is a mileage restriction (I was told you can only drive it for parades and shows) but I've also heard from guys with the plates that the state troopers don't really care.

Yes, there a few people around here with perm. license just cause there old cars!

I don't know of anybody gettin in trouble for driving them. The main thing to remember is with a pickup, you cannot haul any loads, so they might watch out for that, I dont really know. I just got mine running and licensed and I dont plan on hauling anything with it, if I was I would just license it normally.

Washington State plates after 1963 what I can remember.

Not sure exact year but between 65 and 67 they started making the plates

Washington painted on with no year

Car plates had 3 letters then 3 numbers ABC 123

Truck plates had either 1 or 2 letters followed by numbers

A123456 or AB12345
I believe the single letter was used for heavy equipment and trailers mainly but not sure.

During the late 60s the plates were issued according to county, I remember

that Yakima county was the letter E for cars cant remember what the start letter was for trucks.

Some time in the early 70s Id say about 71 or 2 they started Stamping the

Washington in. Still had 3 letters and 3 numbers for cars and Mainly 2

letters and 5 numbers for trucks now.


In the late 70s the plates started having the 3 numbers first followed by 3

letters for cars 720 GAN

and 5 numbers followed by 2 letters for trucks.

In the 80s truck plates went to 1 letter followed by 5 numbers then a letter
