chopping a rearend

the rearend on my truck measures 63.75" from the outside of the drums... I need one 60" wide to get the backspacing I want. So, I need to get either a narrower rearend or get mine chopped... what do you guys think?

Re: chopping a rearend

I just sent mine out and am getting it back today, I just narrowed mine 4" each side. Shortening a rear housing requires a Jig to make sure all is square, having the rear housing shortened isnt all that expensive labor wise, $129 but axles do cost roughly $325+ you will need housing ends, roughly $80, & new bearings and seals, if you decide to upgrade your housing ends and axles to a non C-Clip style setup look to spend $500+. Depending on the rim/tire combo your using new rims may be cheaper. If the tires are wider than what would normally go on a 10" rim than you probally need to shorten the diff as I am doing.

Re: chopping a rearend

A friend of mine put an S-10 (early model) rear end in his '41 Chevy coupe. It was narrow enough to give the car a pro-street look, with the wheels he put on it. Didn't have to cut anything from the width of the axle housing.

Re: chopping a rearend

Redneck, I will respond here vs a pm, new housings are not cheap so expect with a whole new diff is about $2000, that is why I went ahead and chopped mine, though there is still some options, Some ford 9" or the newer 8 something inch rears are about the width you are looking for. Now you also run into another situation and that is gearing you need or want and may be tough to find, as well as the bolt pattern. One of the problems I had was finding the stock style housing end and I ended up having to go the pricier way. I dont know exactly why you want the particular wheel backspacing, just because, want wider wheels/tires, a buddy has a set? The earlier 67-69 is only 62.5 inches if this will work or possibly find a different wheel setup..

See if you can find someone local who does narrowing and see if they can salvage the housing ends and then all you have to do is buy axles and pay his labor, some guys might respline axles other wont because they say it may jeperdize the axle strength, if your axles are tapered up to the splined area then they cant be resplined either.

Re: chopping a rearend

Ay Bowtie67 do you have a pic of that narrowed rearend? I want to narrow mine just haven't found a decent price in Northern CA. RedNeckdds, There was a member on here before that mentioned that a stock rearend was left untouched and ran 12" rims with the 29x14" Hoosiers. It was a 7" bs on a widened rim. All he did was tub the wheeltubs. The rims looked stock depth on the outside but from the rear you can see the substantial rubber.

I will snap some picks of it this weekend, I have it in some what in place to start getting the rear suspension lined up and all lined up.

I still haven't fgiured out my back spacing yet I will be using 12" rims and 15" wide by 29" tall Hoosiers on there, I wanted to make absolutely sure evrything is in its proper place, I think having a nice backspace to have more dish showing looks much better. I am right now pretty sure that the back spacing I will need will be 5"

Moser also does shorting of axle housings, his price isn't bad but I dont know what shipping to and from Indiana is gonna cost you.

Re: chopping a rearend

thanks guys... frizzle, thank you again for the help, I reread my post, it kinda came across unappreciative... my bad... I want to put on some 20x10's with the minimal backspacing, which is 3" or 3 1/2", I believe... the gentleman that built this truck told me thats what he had to do to get it to work. I am an extreme novice at truck building and am trying to do all the research(pickin yalls brains) BEFORE I make expensive mistakes.

Is yours a stepside or Fleetside? The fleets seems to have more are for a wider tire, the steps on the other hand like my 67 Stepside will take a maximum 3.75BS with a 10" rim there might be some minor rubbing on corners. With the wider rear axle you should need or a maximum of 4.5" you could also ask being a lot of guys here run the taller rims etc as to what BS they have on there model, dont forget to specify year and what bed style you have.

Re: chopping a rearend

Some 4x4 S10/Blazers had 59" rear-ends. Some even have posi and discs. I just read that the 65-67 Chevelle had a 60" rear as well.

Or you could go with a 9 inch http://dfwmotorsport.com/Fairlane/9inchrearends.htm

Just need some new rear axle saddles to weld on:
