Anybody running an LT1

Hi,

Is anybody running an LT1 from mid 90's camaro/corvette? I know there is a few running the LS-1 type motors, but I'm more interested in the LT1. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Anybody running an LT1

I Built up a '96 LT1 Impala SS. If you are going to go with this motor keep it to a 96 and up motor. The '96 has a vented optispark(ignition) and the fuel line cross over on the manifold. Stock the '96 and '97 Motors also make more power then the earlier years. Also if you have your choice go with a motor out of an F-body over a B-body. This will insure that you have the aluminum heads, less weight, oval port, and higher compression.

I would have to dig up the specifics but off hand I Had a set of aluminum cnc ported heads installed, a ported intake manifold, a crane cam, comp cam valvetrain and 1-3/4" headers. The motor ran at 10.6:1 compression and dynoed 355hp and 385tq at the tire. Quick math placed the engine hp at 420 to 440 and tq at about 450.

This set up as well as a build 4L60e transmission, 2500 stall converter, 3.73 gears and a fantastic rear suspension got me 13.20s @105, all day, in the 1/4 mile while still turning back 15-17 mpg on the highway and 12-14 in the city. All this in a 4000lb car...

This is a great motor and when I sold the car 4 years ago, w/ 90,000 miles it was just starting to get a bit of blowby in the exhaust but still ran fresh and strong. The one weak link however is the optispart ignition it does fail at times and the replacement isnt cheap...

Just wanting to know how hard/easy the swap was. Did you have to remove or move the AC compressor? Did you buy a wiring harness or use the original? What tranny are you running? Using original truck motor mounts? What are you using for fuel tank and fuel pump? I'm looking at a 1996 corvette LT1 and 4l60e tranny and just wanted some input before I jump in with both feet!!

Thanks in advance,

Re: Anybody running an LT1

Overall the swap was easy. I went with Street and Performance Brackets to correct for the A/C. If you run the Corvette brackets you won't have any problem. Even if you get a Camaro engine you can get the Corvette bracket. I am running a Painless Performance harness, price is better than most and it is a lot better than reworking the stock harness. I used the 4L60E trans. The stock 67-72 V8 engine mounts bolt right up. You will have to move your trans crossmember back about 1.5 inches and drill 2 new holes. I had a stainless tank with the pump inside made by Rock Valley Auto Antiques, great to deal with and they will make it any way you want. Do you have an engine lined up? If not check out Cleveland Pick-A-Part. They are out of Cleveland, OH and will ship anywhere.

Fred, can you provide some details on the fitment - what did it take for motor mounts, trans, driveshaft, etc.?

Re: Anybody running an LT1

i am also looking for info. this weekend i am picking up an LT1 and 4L60 with a complete harness and computer out of a 97 F-body, to install in a 81 4WD blazer. does painless make a harness that connects to your truck's harness or did you have to splice into it to run your factory components (wipers, horns, lights, gauges, etc)? also what did you spend on the harness? any info would be appreciated.

Harness would be stand alone and Painless as well as several other companies make one. It does not connect to your vehicle harness. Harness' run about $350-$500.

What headers are you using? I will be putting a '95 Z-28 LT-1 in my K5 and I have been hunting for a "D" port header that would fit.

Re: Anybody running an LT1

I got all my custom parts from Street and Performance. www.hotrodlane.cc As Musclerodz said, the engine harness is stand alone, so you still run your factory chassis harness

I know where I can pick up a wrecked 95ta $1500 for this set up but after rebuilding everything, wiring harness I might just go with a ram-jet 350.

I'm working on the wiring now. Getting the emissions stuff out. I'm getting the computer reprogrammed.

Re: Anybody running an LT1

If you might be interested in LS1, check the link in my signature to the LS1tech forums. There are some LT1 swap links in there also I think. Good luck on your swap.

Is that the "natural" (non-chrome) brackets from S&P?

Looks good. Just did a search for minibike's truck and last he was doing low 14s with posi rear. Something to look forward to.
