New Temp Guage Hookup - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Just picked up an '84 Blazer with the 305. I'm putting in an aftermarket temp guage...the light isn't cutting it. Where do I install the probe? The last time I insstalled one it was on a '78 with a 350. The sending unit was in the drivers side head. On this '84 there is only a plug with a square insert on the drivers side head. It almost looks like a 3/8" socket opening, but it's not(almost like a rear diff plug). What do I use to get this plug out? I only have a limited run of the capilary tube that the guage came with. So I it looks like it has to be some location on the drivers side of the engine.

There should be a water jacket plug on the drivers side head. Between first two cylinders IIRC.

That's where you place it. To get it out use an extension for your socket wrench that has the ball on the side to help it grab better. Back it out and expect the coolant to come out. Have the new bushing and probe ready. Make sure to use some teflon tape around it to seal it up.

Isnt it better to install the temp probe in the intake?

Actually I prefer the cylinder head site. This was better to tell what the coolant temperature was in the lower part of the engine where the most heat is generated. Unfortunately my temp sender wire would keep melting so I changed it to the intake.
