dana axle identification

Can anyone give me tips on dana axle identification. Looking at a truck, the owner claims the front axle is a dana 60, but its a 3/4t and I am pretty sure its a 44.......can anyone give me something to look at that will help end this debate? Is there a specific diff cover shape to look for? Its suppose to be a late 70's axle.

Thanks

Re: dana axle identification

It will have a raised number in the lower right webbing (looking at it from the front) of the diff like the one circled.

It will be either 44 F or 60 F

The pic is a DANA 60

Re: dana axle identification

You see where it says 44 5F..well that a dana 44..if you see a 60 number there instead of a 44, well then its a dana 60. Easy to check now that you know what to look at..or tell the seller to tell you what it says down in the front part of the webbing of the front diff...its facing forward in the lower right corner as shown.

I'm displaying solid front axles here.

Re: dana axle identification

The Dana60 has three u-bolts and two bolts on the inner driver side instead of a u-bolt.

Re: dana axle identification

Easiest way to check, as sometimes the webbing is covered in grease and grime, and some dodge d44's have 3 ubolts and 2 studs, is to look for kingpins or balljoints.

Kingpins will have a smooth metal cap with a grease zerk, and are held on by 4 bolts. the BJ will have a castle nut on top.

of course, this could be a balljoint 60...but seeing as how they are only in '92 and newer fords + '94 and newer dodges , i dont think its likely.
