Question Exhaust Question ?

In the near future ( hopefully two week time period) plan on replacing old single exhaust with new duals exiting out behind the rear tires at an angle. What do the exhaust experts think of a 2" welded system using turbo pack mufflers? Is it better to run complete and seperate duals or is it a good thing to have an H pipe run connecting the two sides? Not building a street runner here, bear in mind this is a 4x4 with a 350/ 2 bbl and a granny four speed. Have under bed tank in rear of truck and am using the stock cast iron rams horn exhaust headers with straight down dumps. Plan on staying with them, makes changing plugs so much easier and they seal up tight. Have an exhaust shop quoting me a total price of $160 which I thought was pretty reasonable. Thanks to all who answer with tips and in-put>

$160 is d@mn good.
As for a stock 350, 2 inch pipes is plenty. An H pipe is a good idea no matter what, but can make tranny removal a real PITA. You could ask to make the H-pipe removable, and to have the pipes wide enough to drop the tranny out without removing the exhaust.

sounds like a good deal. an H pipe will give you alittle extra power ( you probably won't notice it) and a different sound.

That's what I did with mine, except I used chambered mufflers(Summit). They were a little more than the turbo's, quieter in the cab, but screams like a bat out of hell when you put your foot on the gas. I paid $170 for 2.5" pipe, from my vette ramhorns, exiting at an angle behind the rear tires.

Thats a good deal,I would also reccomend an H pipe. The h pipe will "mellow" the exhaust note a bit,& give more performance in the low to midrange(also said to help milage), but I cant say on that one.......I usually have "five toes in the carb"! As longhorn mail has posted,I would also have the H pipe set up as removeable.......it shouldnt be too much more . Good luck......Al

My exhaust is glasspacks that dump out in front of the tire. 2 1/4 " exhaust. I would like to run it over the rear axle, because of all the noise in the cab. But my exhaust does sound nice.

Won't say how much I just spent on mine. But am running stock manifolds and had 2 1/4" from there to 3 chambered Flowmasters to 3" which exit out behind the rear wheel wells (to the side). I wanted to consider trans work in the future. Instead of the H pipe or equalizer the muffler shop brought them together behind the trans crossmember and siamesed them. Good sound and gave me a boost on the top end. Also they put flanges on the pipe just ahead of the mufflers which are stuffed up under the bed so I can remove them if I need to drop the trans. The 3" tailpipes were overkill I now realize that 2 1/2" probably would have been enough. But all in all I am satisfied.

I sure believe in using the H pipe. Did you listen to mine the day we met? I can't remember if I ever had it running while you were there. I wouldn't put duals on without an H pipe myself.

Thanks guys for all your input and ideas. Sounds as if I need to check into putting the H pipe in the system. I like the idea of having it removeable if needed at some future point.

barn9, never did get to hear your truck at the Winfield show. Wish I had talked to you about the exhaust question then but then can't cover everything at one time. Had a good time at that show with you, Yukon Jack and Blazerboy. Look forward to our next meeting. Plan on having my truck at that meeting when ever that happens. As an a-side, got all the lights working, cig. lighter with the little bulb also, new dash bezel looks good with all new bulbs. Nice and bright. Got the tach wired in today and it works! Only thing left to put in is the sound system, floor padding and rubber mat and the seat belts. Then it is off to get the bed spray done and the exhaust.
