Code 51: PROM Failure
Not what I expected when I came out to the truck this morning. I started the truck and went back inside, and when I came back, the SES light was flashing at a very quick rate, which is something I've never seen a GM light do before. Of course the batteries were dead in my scan tool, and my 2nd set of batteries weren't worth a damn either. I hopped in and tried to drive, and it drove fine. I headed to work, and after a few minutes the light went out. It flickered one more time very briefly about 20 minutes later, but otherwise seems fine. Is it possible that I've just got a poor connection where the MEMCAL plugs into the ECM, or is this likely to be bigger things? |

Re: Code 51: PROM Failure
I haven't had to fix one with that code before. That sucks. Have you removed the MEMCAL lately?

Re: Code 51: PROM Failure
nope. I haven't touched it since I owned the truck. Tonight I'll probably pull it out and reinstall it a couple times just to make sure the contacts are clean.

That is weird! Sounds like you have a plan. Let us know if it fixes it.

Re: Code 51: PROM Failure
I had the EXACT same deal with an 87 monte carlo i had. Came on occasionaly, then the light stayed on constantly
I was worikng at a parts store so I was able to swap computers and put my chip in the new one. The light stayed off so I knew my chip was good. I wouldn't have replaced it because it still ran perfecet and in closed loop, but they won't test the emissions with the light on. Long story short- got a boneyard computer. Fixed it Good Luck -Jeremy

Re: Code 51: PROM Failure
no problems on the way home from work and no problems this morning. I didn't get a chance to screw with it last night, but hopefully this weekend I'll yank the MEMCAL while I do the oil change I've been meaning to get to.
