'67 VIN numbers

Hello all,
I've been getting ready to get my 'discarded' '67 on the road again, and had the local police come by and run the VIN to make sure it wasn't stolen sometime in it's life. The officer said that the VIN was too short and wasn't showing up on the computer as anything. This was a government vehicle, so the VIN is also on a metal plate riveted to the glove box door, and it matches the door sill plate. The only reference I have is my '69 Chevelle which has the 'proper' 13 character VIN, and my '00 GSX-R Suzuki which has 17 characters. Anyone got any insight?

Thanks!

Re: '67 VIN numbers

Not all vins are 13 character so I don't think that's the problem. My 67 step has 12 characters that begin with CS147 so there must be something else wrong. Maybe they don't read vins that old.

Re: '67 VIN numbers

That's what I'm figuring, I doubt the computer systems allow the older VINs. The officer said that he would look into it further, but said that when I was ready to get it registered, give him a call and he would sign the verification sheet and I would be ready to go.

Re: '67 VIN numbers

I have almost the same problem w/ my insurance company [Progressive] Their computers don't show any 67 K truck info so they had to write the policy as a 67 C-20. It's the only thing their computer would recognize being that old.

Re: '67 VIN numbers

I noticed that my progressive info lists my truck as a 4x2. I didn't argue since I only have liability.

My 67 VIN is only 12 digits as well. No trouble getting the sherrif to run the VIN in their computer.

Re: '67 VIN numbers

I have had a few old cars over the years that when I took in the reg. they couldnt find any info in the computers. Only stays in the system so long I guess.

Re: '67 VIN numbers

It's the GMC vins that toss peoples heads in confusions sometimes..not to worry, a few of us here have the knowledge and proof to verify a vins style if need be.
I've seen 67 vins up to 15 charcters long. Lots of times they encorporated model numbers into the vins...and then there's the state of Pennsylvania who had there own state code back then also in the vin.
Not a problem to decode it though...Roger0080 and myself would probably have the books to verify vins ..not sure on some others but possible.

PM me it if you want and leave a few characters at the end off if your into privacy.

Re: '67 VIN numbers

I had the same prob in TX with my 67 -- fortunately the lady I dealt with had prior knowledge and knew how to get around it legally. Godd thing it was a transfer within the same state-- would have been worked out if it wasn't also.

Re: '67 VIN numbers

I'm also having trouble getting a title for a 67' K20 that was abandoned.I have someone else doing it because it was abandoned on their land and they know the owner. It's been 7mo and still nothing from the sherriffs office.I was told I could get an assembled vehicle title easily though.

Re: '67 VIN numbers

I got a warranty title that last only 3 years---then it becomes a normal title. I had the original signed copy for sale but that owner had died years before I tried to transfer title. Previous owner had jumped the title.
