toro flow diesel??

came across a project vehicle with a toro flow v6 diesel in it......I was wondering if anyone could tell me what this thing is worth? I figured it was probably like the GMC v6's where there is a market for them, but their value seems to be relatively low.
Thanks

Re: toro flow diesel??

From what I know, the Toro-Flow was a converted over gas V6, and did NOT have a good reputation for running good. I think they made them in 478's only. If probably wouldn't attempt to fix the vehicle up, unless your planning to swith the engine. Toroflow diesel parts would be like finding a strand of hay in a needle stack: Damned hard to do!

Re: toro flow diesel??

There was 3 of them, a 351, a 478, and a 637 V-8. The problem with them was that they really didn't like to rev., and it was pretty easy to blow the bottom end. They did O.K. in medium duty trucks and school buses, particularly if they were bolted to an Allison. Strange diesel, like the V-6 gas engines they had a short stroke and a big bore. I know someone with a running 478 Toroflow in a bus. I have driven it, and the thing actually makes decent power, though it isn't turbocharged. The biggest problem with them now, if you can find a running one, is that there are NO parts available anymore.

Re: toro flow diesel??

Wasn't that one on EBay about a year ago? I seem to remember something about a later truck with a Toro-Flow. I think it would be fun to try in a light truck but, like Bob B. said, parts would be an issue. I wonder what kind of mileage they'd get?

Re: toro flow diesel??

personally, I like the rare and unique, but I have had my fair share of vehicles that parts do not exist for anymore, and I am in a place where I would rather pass and put my time into my already neglected projects in hopes of someone here possibly wanting to keep this engine alive.

Re: toro flow diesel??

One other ominous thing about Toroflows: I have a bunch of late-60's GMC service bullitens, and you can't believe many were issued on those things!

Re: toro flow diesel??

I will scavange around and see if I have an old autotrader sitting around.....unfortunately I just performed my 6 month cleaning on my house (gotta return the bottles before they over-run the house), but I will see what I can dig up!
